The First 1500 km/1000 Miles

The more cautiously you treat your
engine during the break-in period, the
more satisfied you will be with its
performance later on. Therefore, drive
your vehicle during the firs t 1500 km /
1000 miles at moderate vehicle
and engine speeds.
During this period, avoid heavy loads
(full throttle driving) and high RPMs
(no more than 2/3 of maximum
perm issible speed in each gear).
Avoid accelerating by kickdown. It is
not recom mended to brake the
vehicle by manually shifting to a lower
gear. We recom m end to select posi
tions " S" or " L " only at moderate
speeds (for hill driving).
After 1500 km/1000 miles speeds may
gradually be increased to the perm is
sible maximum.

Special Operating Conditions

Winter Driving

Have your car w interized at an author
ized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer before
the onset of winter.
Engine oil change: If " year-round"
multigrade engine oil is not used,
be sure to use an SAE grade
based on ambient tem perature.
For recom m ended engine oil vis
cosities refer to " Fuels, Coolants,
Lubricants, e tc ." and last page.
For diesel fuels, refer to page 87
and last page.
A nticorrosion/antifreeze in the
coolant: Check anticorro sio n/anti
freeze protection periodically. For
capacity refer to " Fuels, Coolants,
Lubricants, e tc ." .
Additive in the windshield washer
system s: Add windshield washer
solvent to the w ater in the
windshield washer system.
Test battery: Battery capacity
drops with decreasing ambient
tem perature. A well charged bat
tery ensures that the engine can
always be started, even at low
ambient tem peratures.
Tires: We recom m end M + S radial
tires on all wheels fo r the w inter
season. Observe perm issible max
imum speed fo r M + S radial tires
and the legal speed limit.
