3.7 Setting Alarms

The
398 has three operator programmable alarms that you can set to
NAV
advise you when limits have been reached. The types of alarms available
are:
ARRIVAL- Arrival at a waypoint.
l
ANCHOR - Exceeds Anchor drift limit.
l
OFF COURSE- Straying too far from track.
l
Whenever an alarm is set and activated, the audible beeper will sound and
the alarm characters will blink on-screen. You can set an Arrival alarm or
Anchor alarm, but not both types together. Press the[CLEARlkey to silence
the audio alarm.
3.7.1 The Arrival Alarm
The Arrival alarm can be set to alert
you when you are within a specified ARRlvAL ,+ w 9
distance from your waypoint. The ar-
rivalalarmcanbesetErom0.01 to9.99 y
nautical miles (run).
To set an Arrival alarm:
Press thel]key. The
screen appears. This is the alarm set-up screen. Press theI-
ALARMS
the numeric keys. Press-to finish the entry and exit back to the last
used display mode.
Example: To set an Arrival zone of 0.06 nautical
miles; Pres$KiZ$ press 0 , 1 , 0 , m.
There are several factors which should be con-
vessel is or will be traveling, the weather condi-
tions (foggy, rain, clear, etc.), and your familiarity
with the surroundings.
A vessel traveling at 30 knots, will travel 180,000
you 1.2 seconds to react. If the alarm were set to 0.2nm, (1200 ft) you will
have 24 seconds to decide your course of action. In the
