Chapter 2. Installing the storage subsystem and storage
enclosure
This chapter provides instructions for installing the DS3500 storage subsystem and the EXP3500 storage
enclosure in a rack. To install the DS3500 storage subsystem in a rack, see Chapter 2, "Installing the
storage subsystem and storage enclosure." To install the EXP3500 storage enclosure in a rack, see
"Installing the EXP3500 storage enclosure" on page 2-5.
Before you begin the installation, review the safety information in "Safety" on page xi and "Handling
static-sensitive devices" on page 2-3.

Installing the DS3500 storage subsystem

This section provides instructions for installing the DS3500 storage subsystem in a rack.

Inventory checklist

After you unpack the DS3500 storage subsystem, make sure that you have the following items.
Depending on your order, your shipping box might contain additional items that are not on the list.
v Hardware
– Hard disk drives or drive filler panels:
- DS3512 (12)
- DS3524 (24)
– Storage controllers (up to 2)
– AC power supply and fan units (2) (models C2A, E2A, C4A, and E4A)
– DC power supply and fan units (2) (models C4T and E4T)
– AC power cables (2 jumper line cords) (models C2A, E2A, C4A, and E4A)
– DC power jumper cables (2) (models C4T and E4T)
– Rack installation hardware kit:
- Support rails (2) (right and left assembly)
- M5 black hex-head slotted screws (8)
- M5 Washers (6)
- Small diameter spacers (8) (these come installed, four in each rail)
- Large diameter spacers (8)
- M4 pan-head screws (2)
Attention: The DS3500 storage subsystem ac power models do not come with region-specific power
cords. You must obtain the IBM-approved ac power cords for your region. The DS3500 and EXP3500 dc
power models do not come with a 20 A rated disconnect device (circuit-breaker) that is required for the
-48V DC power connection. See "Power cords" on page 7-5 for the IBM-approved ac power cords for
your region.

– IBM System Storage DS3500 Support DVD
The support DVD contains the IBM Storage Manager host software. The DVD also includes
firmware, online help, and the following documentation in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document
Format (PDF):
