remote control unit A storage system at a secondary or remote site that is configured to receive remote I/Os from
(RCU) one or more storage systems at the primary or main site.
remote copy The physical paths that connect a storage system at the primary site to a storage system at the
connections secondary site. Also called data path.
remote site See secondary site.
restore journal Holds differential data on the secondary Continuous Access Journal system until it is copied to
(R-JNL) the secondary volume.

S/N serial number
secondary site The physical location of the storage system that contains the primary volumes of remote replication
pairs at the main or primary site. The storage system at the secondary site is connected to the
storage system at the main or primary site via remote copy connections. The secondary site can
also be called the "remote site". See also primary site.
secondary volume The volume in a copy pair that is the copy. The following HP products use the term "secondary
(S-VOL) volume": Business Copy, Business Copy Z, Continuous Access Synchronous, Continuous Access
Journal, and Continuous Access Journal Z.

seq. sequential
service information SIMs are generated by a RAID storage system when it detects an error or service requirement.
message (SIM) SIMs are reported to hosts and displayed on Remote Web Console.
service processor The computer inside a RAID storage system that hosts the Remote Web Console software and is
(SVP) used by service personnel for configuration and maintenance of the storage system.
severity level Applies to service information messages (SIMs) and Remote Web Console error codes.
shared volume A volume that is being used by more than one replication function. For example, a volume that
is the primary volume of a Continuous Access Synchronous pair and the primary volume of a
Business Copy pair is a shared volume.
shredding See volume shredding.
sidefile An area of cache memory that is used to store updated data for later integration into the copied
data.
SIM service information message
size Generally refers to the storage capacity of a memory module or cache. Not usually used for
storage of data on disk or flash drives.

SN serial number
snapshot A point-in-time virtual copy of a primary volume (P-VOL). The snapshot is maintained when the
P-VOL is updated by storing pre-updated data (snapshot data) in a data pool.
SOM See system option mode (SOM).
source volume The volume in a Compatible FlashCopy copy pair containing the original data.

space Generally refers to the data storage capacity of a disk drive or flash drive.
SSB sense byte
SSD solid-state drive. Another name for a flash drive. In this guide, single level cell (SLC), multi level
cell (MLC) and flash module drive (FMD) are called collectively as SSD.
