1. Introduction This handbook describes the operational characteristics of the SS-8B and SS-16 Any Port To Any Port Smart Switch. This handbook also provides information on the installation of the unit. Emphasis is placed on the character and significance of the various control codes required to exercise the features of the SS-8B and SS-16.
SS-8B and SS-16 This User’s Guide discusses both the SS-8B and SS-16 Smart Switches. The SS-8B includes 8 ports and the SS-16 features 16 ports. Other features function identically. Throughout this User’s Guide the two units are referred to as "SS-8B/16".
2. Start-Up Procedure 2.1. Default Switch Port 1 is designated the MASTER or COMMAND port. Upon power up, the baud rate, parity and duplex of port 1 is set according to the Default Switch, which is accessible from the underside of the unit. The terminal connected to port 1 must match the baud rate and parity set by the switch.
1. Tests RAM memory and indicates any bad memory chips. 2. Clears all buffer areas. 3. Clears all port names. 4. Sets system parameters to defaults. 5. Copies Port 1 attributes to all other ports. 6. Sends the EPROM version. The remaining SS-8B/16 ports may now be initialized.
2.5. System Option Set-Up This routine is used to select the following system parameters, which are common to all ports: Logoff Character: Used in the Logoff sequence to disconnect a port pair. The logoff sequence is a Return followed by three logoff characters and ending with a Return.
SS-8B / SS-16 User's Guide 2.5.2. Message Type This option is used when a short numeric message is required for automatic computer control. Type T for terse response messages, or V for verbose messages, and then press [Enter]. The table below summarizes Terse and Verbose response messages.
[Enter]. To exit the routine press ^E. 3.1. Port Names When the initialization routine is first entered, the SS-8B/16 will send "PORT 01 NAME:XXXXXXXXN", which is the port number followed by the current port name if any. In the default state, ports are not named.
Names may be assigned by group to access ports by system or function. When a name is selected, the SS-8B/16 will search for the first available port with the same name and connect. If all ports are busy, a "BUSY"...
3.4. Handshake Mode Select This routine selects the method of handshaking used by the port buffer for flow control. The SS-8B/16 will respond with "HANDSHAKE:" followed by either XON/XOFF, DTR/CTS, or NONE. The default Handshake Mode is XON/XOFF. Scroll to the desired setting and enter a Return to store the selection and advance to the next routine.
SS-8B / SS-16 User's Guide 3.7. Access Level The next message will be "LEVEL:" followed by either 1 or 2. Scroll to the desired level and press [Enter]. In the default state, Port 1 is set to Level 1, and all other ports are set to Level 2.
Port Initialization Procedure This completes the set-up routine for this port. The SS-8B/16 will then advance to the next port number and display the name. Each port can be configured using this procedure. If all ports are to be configured the same or some parameters are...
Printer configured for DTR/CTS can connect to a Computer Configured for XON/XOFF. The SS-8B/16 will perform the conversion. If the printer dropped it's Ready pin, (due to it's buffer being full) the SS-8B/16 would send an XOFF to the Computer if the SS-8B/16's buffer became full. 3.10.1.1.
Port Initialization Procedure The READY INPUT pin (pin 20 for DTE, pin 5 for DCE interface) acts as a Clear to Send to the port buffer. A low level will halt data from being released. A high level will resume data transmission.
SS-8B / SS-16 User's Guide Condition 2 would be used when connecting a CRT or Computer which may require a high on the Clear to Send pin to allow it to transmit data when attempting to wake-up the port. This option is selected for each port using the Initialize routine.
4. User Port Operation 4.1. Port Wake-Up Each port is in a wait condition when not in the Command Mode or connected to another port. In this mode all data is ignored except the "Wake-up" command. Type ^E ([Ctrl] plus [E]; Inquire Code) and then press [Enter] to wake the port and enter the command mode.
SS-8B / SS-16 User's Guide 4.3. Status Display Type an uppercase S and then press [Enter] to display the Status Table, which shows the port connect status and set-up parameters for all ports. The Port Status column displays the connect status of each port.
The Logoff sequence is the only command the port will accept once connected. The sequence is passed through the port to disconnect a second SS-8B/16 in the event two or more units are "daisy chained". A disconnect message can be sent from each port. This message can be employed as a user message or to perform a logoff on your computer.
Level 1 port has access to all the command functions. Port 1 is always set to Level 1 since it is the Master Port and must be able to configure the remaining ports when initializing the SS-8B/16. Ports set for Level 2 cannot connect to a Level 1 port. Level 1 ports can connect to Level 1 or Level 2 ports.
SS-8B / SS-16 User's Guide 5.3. Disconnecting Remote Ports Only a level 1 port can disconnect a remote port pair. The disconnect command uses the following format: D XX [Enter] Where XX is the name or number of either of the connected ports.
B XX YY ZZ [Enter] Where XX, YY, and ZZ are port names or numbers. The "wild card" character "*" will broadcast to all ports. The SS-8B/16 will respond with "ENTER MESSAGE". A message of up to 1000 characters may be sent. To send the message to the selected ports, press ^C (End of Text Code).
A. Interface Description A.1. DTE/DCE Switch The SS-8B/16 consists of 8 or 16 serial RS232C ports. Each 25 pin Female connector has an associated push button switch which configures the connector for either a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) or DCE (Data Communications Equipment) interface.
Port 1. Upon power up, port 1 defaults to the switch setting. Size: SS-8B: 3.75" X 8.75" X 12.00" (H x D x W) SS-16: 3.75" X 8.75" X 17.00" (H x D x W)
