MAKING THE SETTINGS ON THE CAMERA'S POWERGRIP

On newer H camera models the ISO and White Balance settings previously described can also
be made on the LCD display on the powergrip instead of the digital back. Any settings that
are made in this fashion will override the settings that have been made previously on the sen-
sor unit and the new settings will show up on the display screen. Proceed as follows:
Press the Menu button on the grip. Turn the front control wheel to Digital.
Press the Drive/Enter button. Turn the front control wheel to either ISO setting or White
Balance.
In the ISO setting, turn the rear control wheel until the desired ISO value appears on the
screen.
In the White Balance setting turn the rear wheel to the desired value.
Press the ISO/WB (Drive) button to lock either or both settings.

ISO AND WHITE BALANCE SETTINGS ON H3DII CAMERAS

On H3DII cameras the ISO and White Balance settings are made as described above. The only
difference is that the Enter/Drive button is now known as the ISO/WB button. To make a
Manual White Balance setting, press the Man (AF) button then turn the rear control wheel to
select the color temperature between 2000 and 10,000 K.
ISO Settings
Digital images can be recorded at different ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 400 (to ISO 800
on H3D31 and H3DII-31). As in fi lm photography it is best to select the lowest ISO that is
suitable for a particular lighting situation and use the higher settings only when necessary.
A lower value produces the best quality with the minimum amount of noise. To set the ISO
on a digital sensor unit, press the Menu button. Set the ISO by depressing the
Lock the set value be pressing the Menu/Exit button. The set ISO value is seen on top of the
preview screen and on the grip LCD display of H camera models.
White Balance
Color fi lm photographers are very aware of color temperature since color transparency fi lms
are made as daylight fi lm matched to a color temperature of 5600 K and as a Tungsten version
for 3200 K. Furthermore, as described in Chapter 17, fi lm photographers use light balance and
conversion fi lters to match the color temperature of the light to that of the fi lm.
In digital photography, White Balance is used to obtain images with the proper or desired
color rendition. It is the digital way of telling the camera or the computer what type of light
you are working with. You must set the white balance to produce images with proper colors
eliminating or reducing the need for further adjustments — so called Neutralization in the
Phocus or FlexColor software. Since the Hasselblad 3RF fi le is a raw fi le, further adjustments
can, and in most cases should be made in Phocus or FlexColor and can be done without
affecting the image quality.
