Read and understand all the safety rules listed in this manual and follow all procedures listed in MAINTENANCE before
making repairs. Refer to the gas engine owner's manual for troubleshooting the gas engine.
Problem
Motor hums or runs slowly when first
turned on, but compressor does not
start.
Motor then stops humming.
- Fuses blow
- Circuit breakers trip
- Motor thermal overload trips
Compressor won't operate.
Noisy operation.
Excessive vibrations.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Possible Cause
Lubricant being used is too heavy.
Too many lights or appliances being
operated on the same circuit as the
compressor (circuit overloaded).
Defective check valve or unloader.
Freezing temperature.
Motor sized incorrectly.
Drive belt too tight.
Incorrect size fuse or circuit breaker.
Lack of proper ventilation room
temperature too high.
Defective engine.
Lack of lubricant in compressor (can
cause serious damage to compressor).
Belt too tight or too loose.
Lack of lubricant in crankcase.
Loose pulley, flywheel, belt,
compressor or motor fasteners,
beltguard, clamps or accessories.
Carbon deposits on piston or valves.
Worn main bearings, broken piston,
worn wrist pins, wrist pin bearings, or
loose connecting rod bolt.
Pulley & flywheel misaligned or loose.
Bent crankshaft.
Belt loose.

Solution
Use a lighter weight lubricant (refer to
LUBRICATION).
Try another circuit or remove other
appliances from circuit being used.
Replace check valve or unloader.
Warm the compressor or use a lighter
weight lubricant (refer to LUBRICATION).
Replace with correctly sized motor.
Re-adjust belt (refer to BELT
ALIGNMENT & ADJUSTMENT).
Check for proper size fuse.
Move the compressor to a well
ventilated area.
Replace or repair engine.
Add lubricant (refer to LUBRICATION).
Adjust belt (refer to BELT ALIGNMENT &
ADJUSTMENT).
Check for possible damage to
bearings. Add lubricant (refer to
LUBRICATION).
Tighten where necessary.
Remove the cylinder head and inspect
for foreign matter on top of the piston.
Clean.
Take compressor to Service Center.
Re-align or tighten pulley and flywheel.
Take compressor to Service Center.
Tighten belt (refer to BELT ALIGNMENT
& ADJUSTMENT).
