The gears are drop forged steel, heat treated for strength
and long life. The clutch gear is supported in the case on a
ball bearing and the mainshaft is piloted at the front on roller
bearings in the clutch gear and supported in the case at the
rear by a large ball bearing. The countershaft is mounted at
the front in a roller bearing and at the rear in a large ball
bearing.
Description (5-Speed Transmission). A 5-speed transmission
is available as optional equipment on 2 and 2lh ton trucks.
The transmission is a manually shifted, synchro-mesh, helical
gear type. Fifth forward speed is direct
drive.
The main drive
gear bearing is a single row ball
type.
The mainshaft is sup-
ported by a straight roller bearing at the front and a single
row ball bearing at the rear. The countershaft is mounted on
a single row ball bearing at the front and on a roller bearing
at the
rear.
The reverse idler cluster rotates on steel-backed
bronze bushings.
Description (Heavy-Duty 5-Speed Transmission). A 5-speed
transmission of heavier construction with greater torque
capacity is standard equipment on the heavy-duty 2lh ton
trucks.
The countershaft is mounted on a straight roller bear-
ing at the front and a single row ball bearing at the rear. The
reverse idler cluster rotates on two straight roller bearings.
Care and Maintenance. Chevrolet 3, 4 and 5-speed transmis-
sions require very little care or maintenance. The lubricant
level should be checked at regular intervals and lubricant
added as necessary. See instructions in the Lubrication Sec-
tion for further information on the maintenance of your trans-
mission.

Description (Hydra-Matic Transmission). An automatic trans-
mission is available as optional equipment on
%, %, 1 and
Ilh ton models. This transmission provides greater operating
convenience,
particularly in continuous stop-and-go operation,
and greater versatility for the vehicle in meeting all driving
conditions by virtue of the range of gear ratios
included.
Two separate options are available, one for lh ton models,
and another for
%, 1 and Ilh ton models. Each option has a
separate set of ratios appropriate for the rated gross vehicle
weight of the models in which it is
used.
