3. Rem ove axle shafts as outlined in Truck Service
M anual.
Before proceeding w ith follow ing steps, it
is advisable to check the existing ring gear to pinion
backlash as described in Step 9 o f "Differential Case
- Installation." This w ill indicate gear or bearing wear
or an error in backlash or pinion depth setting which
will help in determining cause o f axle noise. Backlash
should be recorded so that if sam e gears are reused,
then may be reinstalled at original lash to avoid
changing gear tooth contact.
4. R em ove adjusting nut lock retainers from bearing
caps.

5. Mark bearing caps for reinstallation in the same
position, and rem ove caps.
6. Loosen side bearing adjusting nuts, using J-24429 as
show n in figure 3E.
7. R em ove differential from carrier.
Side Bearing R eplacem ent
1. Install bearing puller J -8 107 onto one side bearing,
w ith puller screw centered on pilot plug as show n in figure
4E. Be sure to install puller fingers into notches o f case, in
order to pull on inner race only.
2. Tighten puller screw, w hile rotating bearing to insure
that bearing cage is not being distorted.
3. R em ove the other bearing in the sam e manner.
