the P ulley Rim. If any portion o f the sheer edge o f the Pulley
Rim prevents the installation o f the Inertia Ring, the raised
edge m ay be filed off to rem ove the excess metal and

4. A ssem ble the Inertia R ing onto the Pulley Rim,
being careful to align the inertia ring m ounting holes with
the m ounting holes in the pulley rim. If the Inertia Ring
must be rotated on the Pulley Rim for centering the
m ounting holes and cannot be shifted by hand, use a drift
punch or blunt tool and a hamm er to carefully tap the
Inertia R ing at a clearance notch, Figure ID -92, to move
the ring into position.
5. Install a special lockw asher onto each 1/4-28 X 1 7 /
32" m ounting screw.
6. A pply Loctite 601 (or equivalent sealer) to the screw
threads o f each m ounting screw and threads o f the m ounting
holes in the Clutch Rotor. W et the threads thoroughly to
ensure com plete thread coverage.
7. Install the screws into the m ounting holes and
tighten finger-tight. Torque each screw to 100 in. lbs.
torque.
8. Lock the three screws in place by flattening the
special washer against two sides o f the hex head screw using
vise grip pliers and one portion o f the lockwasher bent down
over the edge o f the inertia ring slot, Figure ID -92.
NOT
m ove the screw heads from the torqued position.
Locking o f the screws m ust be similar to the production
form ing o f the lockwasher in order to effectively retain the
screw.
9. Retighten the com pressor drive belt to proper belt
tension.
10. Check com pressor and system operation.
NOTICE:
If "mounting notch" screws m ust be replaced
for any reason, the screws should be torqued into place
(100 in. lbs. torque) using Loctite 601 (or equivalent
sealer) on the threads and locked into place similar to
the original locking m ethod.
Procedure II
INERTIA
RING
AND
ASSEMBLY ■ REPLACEMENT (NEW PULLEY RIM AND
INERTIA RING KIT REQUIRED)
1. Loosen the com pressor m ounting bracket and
rem ove the com pressor drive belt.
2. R em ove the Clutch Hub and D rive Plate assembly
as described in "R-4 Compressor Clutch Plate and Hub
Assembly" R em oval procedure.
3. To rem ove as an assembly, perform Steps 1 through
4 o f "R-4 Com pressor Clutch R otor a n d /o r Bearing"
but do not loosen or remove the

4. R em ove all six pulley rim m ounting screws and
lockwashers from the assem bly and discard.
5. Separate the Pulley R im and Inertia R ing assembly
away from the R otor and Bearing assembly.
6. Inspect the drive surfaces of the R otor and Drive
Plate to be sure they are still in good condition. Replace as
required.
7. A ssem ble a new Pulley R im over the Clutch Coil and
mount the Pulley R im to the R otor and Bearing assembly,
using the short notch m ounting locations, Figure ID -91.
The m ounting notches are located 120° apart radially
around the P ulley Rim.
8. A ssem ble three new lockwashers on the three new
1/4-28 X 5/16" m ounting screws and apply Loctite 601 (or
equivalent sealer) to the entire thread surface o f the
m ounting screws into the short notch m ounting hole
locations and tighten finger tight.
9. A lign the Pulley R im so that the bottom o f the rim
notches touch the m ounting screws at all three m ounting
locations. A lso center the drilled holes in the Pulley Rim
with the rem aining m ounting holes in the Rotor. W hen the
rim is positioned properly, tighten the three m ounting
screws to 100 in. lbs. torque.
10. Tem porarily make a trial fit o f the Inertia R ing to
the Pulley Rim . If any portion o f the sheer edge o f the Pulley
Rim prevents the installation o f the Inertia Ring, the raised
