(Figure 7A 1 -114). A n arbor press and
J-23327-1 can be used to compress the retainer and spring
assembly.
10. R em ove J-23327-1 a n d /or J-6129.
11. Oil and install the direct clutch plates into the direct
clutch housing, starting with a flat steel and alternating
com position-faced and flat steel clutch plates (See Figure
7 A 1-121 and Clutch Plate Usage Chart, Figure 7A 1-96).

12. Install backing plate, chamfered side up.
13. Install snap ring. (Figure 7A 1-113).
NOTICE:
M ake sure com position clutch plates turn
freely.

Forward Clutch Housing Assembly

Inspection
1. Inspect teflon oil seals on turbine shaft for damage
and
free
fit
in grooves. D o not remove unless replacing.
2. Rem ove and inspect forward clutch to direct clutch
thrust washer for damage. (Figure 7A 1-123).
3. Place forward clutch down with turbine shaft
through hole in work bench.
4. R em ove snap ring and inspect for damage. (Figure
7 A 1-124).
5. R em ove backing plate from the forward clutch
housing.
6. R em ove the clutch plates from the forward clutch
housing and keep them separated from the direct clutch
plates. (See Clutch Plate Usage Chart, Figure 7A 1-96).
7. Inspect com position-faced and steel clutch plates for
signs o f wear or burning.
8. Inspect backing plate for scratches or damage.
9. Using tools J -2 5 0 18, J-25024 and J-23327-1 compress
retainer and spring assembly and remove snap ring. (Figure
7A 1-125). A n arbor press and tools J-25018 and J-23327-1
can be used to com press the retainer and spring assembly.
10. R em ove J-23327-1, J-2504 and J-25018.
11. R em ove retainer and spring assembly from housing.
12. Inspect release spring retainer for distortion.
13. Inspect release springs for being collapsed.
14. R em ove forward clutch piston.
15. R em ove forward clutch outer and inner piston seals
and discard. (Figures 7 A 1-126 and 7A 1-127).
16. D o not rem ove the clutch apply ring from the piston
unless the piston or apply ring requires replacement.
17. Inspect the forward clutch piston and clutch apply

ring assembly for cracks or damage.
NOTICE:

18. Inspect forward clutch housing for cracks, opened
oil passages or other damage.
19. Check for free operation o f check ball.
20. Inspect forward clutch housing snap ring groove for
damage or burrs.
21. Inspect turbine shaft for open oil passages on both
ends o f shaft and journals for damage.
22. Inspect cup plug for damage. If cup plug is damaged

or missing, proceed as follows:
a. U se 4m m (N o. 3) easy out or equivalent (grind to

fit) and rem ove cup plug.
b. Install new cup plug to 1.0mm (.039") below surface.
Reassem bly
1. Install clutch apply ring on piston.
2. Install new outer and inner seals on piston with lips
facing away from clutch apply ring side. (Figures 7A 1-126
and 7 A 1-127).
NOTICE:
clutch piston past large forward clutch snap ring
groove. G roove could cut outer seal on piston.
3. Lubricate seals and install forward clutch piston.
(Figure 7A 1-129).
NOTICE:
tool between the inner seal and shaft; rotate tool around
the shaft to com press the lip o f the seal, while pushing
down slightly on the piston. U se the same procedure
