7. Rotate the pulley rim and rotor to insure that pulley
rim is rotating "in-line". If pulley rim is distorted (does not
rotate in-line) adjust or replace pulley rim.
8. Tighten pulley rim m ounting screws to 100 inch-
pounds torque and lock screw heads in place by bending
special lock washers (Figure ID -88).
9. Reinstall Clutch
Plate and Hub assembly as
described in "R-4 Compressor Clutch Plate and Hub"
Replacem ent procedures.

R-4 COMPRESSOR CLUTCH COIL

A N D /O R PULLEY RIM

NOTICE:
If original pulley rim was equipped with an
inertia ring, either bolted or welded on, or if a ring is
to
be
added,
refer
IN S T A L L A T IO N follow ing. *
Remove
1. Perform Steps 1 through 4 o f "R-4 Compressor
Clutch R otor an d /or Bearing" Rem oval procedure but do
not loosen or remove the pulley rim m ounting screws until
the Clutch Rotor, Coil and Pulley Rim assembly have been
rem oved from the Front Head. Be careful not to drop the
Puller G uide J-25031-1 when rem oving the assembly.
2. R em ove the pulley rim m ounting screws and special
lock washers. D iscard the lock washers.
3. Slide the pulley rim o ff the R otor and Hub assembly.
The Pulley R im and the Clutch Coil (Figure ID -89) are
replaceable at this point.

Replace
1. A ssem ble the Clutch Coil, Pulley Rim and the
C lutch R otor and Bearing assem bly as shown in Figure 1D-
90. U se new special lock washers and apply sealer (Loctite
RC -75, L octite 601, or equivalent) to screw threads but do
not lock the screws in place.
2. Place the assembly on the neck o f the Front Head
and seat into place using R otor and Bearing Installer J-
26271 (Figure ID -88).
Before fully seating the assembly on the Front Head,
be sure the clutch coil terminals are in the proper location
in relation to the com pressor and that the three protrusions
on the rear o f the clutch coil align with the locator holes
in the Front Head.

3. Install the rotor and bearing assembly retaining ring
and reassemble the C lutch Plate and Hub assembly as
described in "R-4 Compressor C lutch Plate and Hub
Assembly" R eplacem ent procedure. Check to see that the
clutch plate to clutch rotor air gap is .020 - .040 inches.
R otate the Pulley Rim and R otor to be sure the Pulley
Rim is rotating "in-line" and adjust or replace as required.
4. Tighten the pulley rim m ounting screws to 100 inch-
pounds torque and lock the screw heads in place by bending
lock washers (Figure ID -88).
R-4 COMPRESSOR INERTIA RING
INSTALLATION
R -4 com pressors w ill be built w ith one o f three
conditions:
1) N o Inertia R ing installed - no installation is required
unless directed by a diagnostic procedure. If a ring is to be
added, use Procedure I.
2) A bolted - on Inertia R ing is installed - replace using
Procedure I. A ll new screws, washers, and Loctite 601 (or
equivalent) must be used.
3) A welded - on Inertia R ing is installed - replace using
Procedure II.
Procedure I
1. Loosen the com pressor drive belt and rotate the
com pressor pulley as required to locate one screw and lock
washer m ounted through a "m ounting hole" o f the Pulley
Rim, Figure ID-91,, rather than a "m ounting notch" screw
DO NOT
location.
rem ove the drive belt unless necessary.
NOTICE:
For identification purposes, washers locked
over the edge o f the f*tilley R im at the "mounting hole"
locations will not usually dim ple down in the center like
the indentation o f the lockover at a "mounting notch"
screw location."
2. R em ove the three m ounting screws and ldefcwashers
at the pulley rim "mounting hole" locations. (The pulley, rim
"mounting holes" are located 120° apart radially around the
