Strong recommendations:
Take a blood sample from the ball of the hand
or lower arm only:
• Before a meal or on an empty stomach (more
than two hours after the previous meal).
• Two hours or more after a dose of insulin.
• Two hours or more after physical exercise.
Never take a blood sample from the ball of
the hand or lower arm if:
• You think your blood glucose value is low.
• You often fail to notice that your blood glucose
value is low.
• The readings identified using the AST cap do not
match the way you feel.
• You think your blood glucose value is high.
• The blood glucose values you take at regular
intervals differ frequently.
Only take blood samples from the finger tip:
• When you are ill.
• When you are hypoglycaemic, because blood
samples from the finger tip can measure
changes to the blood glucose level more
quickly than from other parts of the body.
• After physical exercise.
• Two hours or less after eating.
• After injecting rapid-acting insulin (two hours
or less).
• If you have just administered insulin.
• If you often do not notice that your blood
glucose level is low.
• If the readings you took with the AST cap do not
match the way you feel, perform a test on the
finger tip to confirm the result again.
