Drive Chain Slack

1. Check the amount of chain slack by
moving the vehicle slightly forward to
gain slack at the top side of the chain.
2. Collapse the suspension with an
adjustable (buckle type) trailer tie-
down strap. Fasten the strap around
the axle and rear bumper tube.
3. Tighten the strap until a straight line
can be drawn from the rear axle to the
gearcase output shaft intersecting the
swing arm pivot. This establishes the
tightest chain position.
4. Pull down on the chain tensioner to
move it out of the way, then measure
chain slack. It should have 1/4"-1/2" (6-12 mm) deflection.
5. If the chain needs adjustment, use the procedure on page 139.
