water. After cleaning, the top of the battery should be
flushed
off
with
clear
water.
To
reduce the tendency of the
terminals
to
corrode, coat them with petrolatum.
Starter
Description.
The
starting
motor on
all
models
except
Forward
Control units
is designed to incorporatE" a
manual
shift drive
mechanism which assures
positive
engagement of
the
starting
motor
pinion
with
the
flywheel
until
the engine is started.
Both
the
% and
1 ton Forward Control units
are equipped with
a
solenoid controlled starting motor
operated by
means of
,
a
starter button located on
the
dash.
Maintenance-
Keep
the terminal nut tight on the starting switch.
Check
the switch mounting screws, solenoid mounting and starting
motor
bolts
periodically
to
make sure
they
remain tight.
Re-
move the
commutator cover band every
5,000 miles and blow
out any dust. If the
commutator
is
dirty it
may be
cleaned with
a
strip of
No.
00
sandpaper.
Do not
use
emery cloth.
Generating System
Description.
The
generating system
consists of the
generator,
voltage
and current regulator,
ammeter and necessary
wiring.
The
ammeter
indicates whether
current is
being
supplied
to
or removed from
the
battery.
The generator used
on
all Chevrolet
trucks
has
sufficient
capacity to supply all regularly
used accessories and
keep the
battery
fully
charged
providing
the
system
is in
good
con·
dition.
The
generator'Output
is
controlled by the combined
current
and voltage
regulator
and
circuit
breaker. The
circuit
breaker
points close
wh
en
the
generator voltage
is
h'igher
than the
bat~
tery
voltage so that current can flow
to
the battery,
and open
when the
generator voltage is lower
than
the battery voltage
to
prevent the
battery from
discharging through the
generator.
The
current
regulator protects the
generator
by preventing
the
generator output from exceeding 32
to 40 amperes.
The
voltage regulator
protects the battery
and
electr~cal
system by preventing
the
generator voltage from exceeding
7.0
to 7.7
volts.
Care.
The
connections
in
the entire generating
circuit
must
be
kept
tight
and free
from
corrosion
or
anything
that
will
cause
