2005 Mustang Workshop Manual
Normal Operation
The instrument cluster receives the ETC status from the powertrain control module (PCM) over the communication network. When a system concern is detected, the PCM sends the
instrument cluster a command signal to illuminate the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
Possible Causes
PCM

PINPOINT TEST T: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
T1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DTCs FROM BOTH THE
CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS
Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
Are any DTCs recorded?
T2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND
USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
Ignition ON.
Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
Select the instrument cluster warning lamps and chime active command. Trigger the all lamps
active command on and off. Observe the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator illuminate when triggered on
and turn off when triggered off?
T3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
Disconnect the instrument cluster connector.
Check for:
corrosion
pushed-out pins
Connect the instrument cluster connector and make sure it seats correctly.
Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
T4 CHECK FOR CORRECT POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) OPERATION
Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
Check for:
corrosion
pushed-out pins
Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Pinpoint Test U: The Failsafe Cooling Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The failsafe cooling warning indicator informs the driver the engine coolant is overheating due to loss of engine coolant fluid or other cause, and the powertrain control module (PCM) is
taking on limp home strategy. The other purpose is to inform the driver the engine cannot be cooled enough with the limp home strategy and the engine is about to be shut down by the
PCM. The failsafe cooling information is sent from the PCM to the instrument cluster to illuminate the failsafe cooling warning indicator.
Possible Causes
PCM
instrument cluster
PINPOINT TEST U: THE FAILSAFE COOLING WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
U1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) DTCs FROM THE
CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS
Retrieve the recorded PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
Are any DTCs recorded?
U2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME ACTIVE
COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
Ignition ON.
Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
Select the instrument cluster warning lamps and chime active command. Trigger the all lamps
active command on and off. Observe the failsafe cooling warning indicator.
Does the failsafe cooling warning indicator illuminate when triggered on and turn off
when triggered off?
U3 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
Check for:
corrosion
