To release the soap box on the John Lewis JLWD 1609:
1. Press the catch downwards.
2. Pull the drawer out.
3. Flush it under a tap to remove detergent residue.
4. Remove the top part of the fabric softener compartment for better cleaning if needed.

To release the filter:
1. Wait until the water has cooled down if necessary.
2. Open the pump door using a coin to lever it open.
3. Place a bowl near the pump to collect any water spillage.
4. Use pliers to pull out the emergency emptying cap from the filter cover.
5. Once no more water comes out, unscrew the pump cover using pliers and remove the filter.
6. Keep a rag nearby to dry any spilled water.

Always wait until the appliance has finished its cycle and is empty before removing the pump cover.
