    An electronic device exposed to ESD may not be affected at all and can work perfectly throughout a normal cycle. Or the device may function normally for a while, then degrade in the internal layers, reducing its life expectancy. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the computer when you are removing or installing internal components, observe these precautions: Keep components in their electrostatic-safe containers until you are ready to install them.

There are as many as 42 screws that must be removed, replaced, and/or loosened when servicing the computer.
  • Page 24 Remove the 4 rubber feet. NOTE: The front feet (1) and the rear feet (2) are not interchangeable. Make sure to install the computer feet in their proper locations on the computer base enclosure. To install the rubber feet, remove the protective backing from the rubber feet and install them in the locations indicated in the above illustration.

  • Page 28 Remove the five Phillips PM1.9×5.7 screws (1) and eight Phillips PM1.9×4.3 screws (2) that secure the keyboard/top cover to the base enclosure. Turn the computer right side up. Open the computer as far as it will open. Detach the front edge of the keyboard/top cover (1) from the base enclosure. Lift the keyboard/top cover (2) until it rests at an angle.
  • Page 29 Remove the keyboard/top cover (7) by sliding it away from the computer at an angle. NOTE: The thermal material must be thoroughly cleaned from the surfaces of the heat sink and the system board components each time the keyboard/top cover is removed. A thermal pad is used on the processor (1) and the heat sink section (2) that services it.

  • Page 40 Disconnect the power connector cable (4) from the system board. Remove the four Phillips PM1.9×2.8 screws (1) that secure the system board to the base enclosure. Lift the right side of the system board (2) until it rests at an angle. Remove the system board (3) by sliding it up and to the right at an angle.

    Install thermal paste on the following components: Thermal paste is used on the processor (1) and the heat sink (2). Reverse this procedure to install the heat sink. Display assembly NOTE: The display assembly is spared at the subcomponent level only. For more display assembly spare part information, see the individual removal subsections.

If it is necessary to replace the display bezel: The display bezel is available using the following spare part numbers: 783043-001: Silver finish 786041-001: Purple finish 788087-001: Green finish Remove the display panel screw covers (1). The display panel screw covers are included in the Rubber Kit, spare part number 784533-001.
  • Page 44 Lift the top edge of the display panel (2). Swing the display panel up and forward until it rests upside down in front of the display enclosure (1). Release the adhesive strip (2) that secures the display panel cable connector to the display panel. Disconnect the display panel cable (3) from the display panel.
  • Page 45 Disconnect the webcam/microphone module cable (3) from the webcam/microphone module. Remove the webcam/microphone module. The webcam/microphone module is available using spare part number 784986-001.     Updating the BIOS Updated versions of the BIOS may be available on the HP website. Most BIOS updates on the HP website are packaged in compressed files called SoftPaqs. Some download packages contain a file named Readme.txt, which contains information regarding installing and troubleshooting the file.

    If your computer is connected to a network, consult the network administrator before installing any software updates, especially system BIOS updates.     Using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) HP PC Hardware Diagnostics is a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) that allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine whether the computer hardware is functioning properly. The tool runs outside the operating system so that it can isolate hardware failures from issues that are caused by the operating system or other software components.

    Use HP Recovery Manager after you successfully set up the computer, to create HP Recovery media. This step creates a backup of the HP Recovery partition on the computer. The backup can be used to reinstall the original operating system in cases where the hard drive is corrupted or has been replaced.
