CAUTION: Before removing any PCI/PCI-X expansion board, be sure to turn off
power to the PCI/PCI-X slot by using either the PCI/PCI-X power button or the
Windows 2000 Eject/Remove Hardware applet. Failure to do so will result in a
"surprise style" removal and may result in system failure.
Software Components
PCI Hot Plug support for Windows 2000 is provided through the PCI Hot Plug
Filter driver, the Compaq Systems Management driver, and hot-plug-aware
drivers. All of these components are included in the Compaq Support Paq for
Windows 2000.
Installing PCI Support
Compaq Support Paq for Microsoft Windows 2000, version 5.00A or later,
contains all of the software components required to support Compaq PCI Hot
Plug. Included on the Support Paq are hot-plug-aware device drivers, such as
Compaq NC 3131 Controllers and the Smart Array 3200 Controller. The
Support Paq also provides the PCI Hot Plug Filter driver, and the System
Management drivers.
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
Supported PCI Functionality
Compaq PCI Hot Plug support under Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 provides hot
replacement for I/O expansion boards. An expansion board equipped with a
hot-plug aware device driver can be replaced without shutting down the
system. If the expansion board is part of a redundant pair, the failed expansion
board can be replaced while users continue to communicate with the server
through the additional expansion board. Once an expansion board has been
replaced, PCI Hot Plug technology enables you to bring the PCI/PCI-X slot
back into service.
NOTE: Under the current version of Windows NT 4.0, hot addition is not possible. Empty
slots are powered up at boot and opening the slot release lever will cause the slot to be
powered off. If you add a board in this manner, you will not be able to power up the slot.
