Calibrating and Orienting Your SMART Board interactive
display frame
Digital cameras in the bottom corners of the interactive display frame track the position of the
pencil or your finger on the flat panel's screen, and then send the information to the installed
SMART software. SMART software then interprets this information as mouse clicks, electronic ink
or ink removal in the appropriate location.
Before you can use your flat panel as an interactive product, you must calibrate it. This process
ensures that the cameras accurately track your finger and the pencil on the panel's screen.
The first time you connect your SMART Board interactive display frame, if you don't see a pop-up
bubble telling you to calibrate the flat panel, use your computer's mouse to open the SMART
Connection Wizard. Use the wizard to test your pencil nib and eraser to ensure that they're
working correctly. After you test your pencil and eraser, use your computer's mouse to click
Calibrate and start the calibration process. After you calibrate your interactive display frame, the
flat panel screen is touch sensitive.
You can access the calibration and orientation features at any time from SMART Notebook's
control panel to further refine the cameras' tracking precision.
The following procedures guide you through the SMART Connection Wizard.

Using the SMART Connection Wizard to Test Your Pencil

Your SMART Board interactive display frame comes with a battery-powered pencil. When you
touch the writing surface with an object, digital cameras located in the lower corner blocks detect
and register the horizontal and vertical (or x,y) coordinates of that object on the flat panel's
surface. By default, the tip of the pencil creates digital ink on the flat panel, and the back of the
pencil erases digital ink. Touch the writing surface to use your finger as a mouse.

TIP
CAUTION
Use the SMART Connection Wizard to make sure the pencil's tip and eraser are
working correctly.

• Replace the pencil's AAA battery when the Low Battery warning bubble appears
on your flat panel's screen.
• SMART software must be running on your computer before you can use the
pencil's digital ink and eraser features.
For best results, hold your pencil perpendicular to the writing surface so that your
palm doesn't block the cameras' view. As you write, lift your pencil off the flat
panel's surface so that you don't create extra lines between strokes.
Use the pencil carefully. Dropping it may break it.
