Frequently Asked Questions (15)

  • How do I start a Husqvarna 224L Trimmer?

To start your Husqvarna 224L Trimmer, follow these steps:

    For a cold engine:

    1. Set the stop switch to the start position.
    2. Set the choke control to the choke position.
    3. Press the air purge repeatedly until fuel begins to fill the bulb; it does not need to be completely filled.

    For a warm engine:

    1. Set the stop switch to the start position.
    2. Put the choke in working position.
    3. Press the air purge repeatedly until fuel begins to fill the bulb; it does not need to be completely filled.

    To start the engine:

    1. Hold the body of the machine on the ground with your left hand.
    2. Grip the starter handle with your right hand and slowly pull the cord until you feel resistance (the starter pawls grip).
    3. Quickly and powerfully pull the cord. Do not pull the starter cord all the way out, and do not let go of the starter handle when the cord is fully extended, as this can damage the machine.
    4. Reset the choke when the engine fires, and repeat pulling the cord until the engine starts.

CAUTION! When the engine is started with the choke in either the choke or start throttle positions, the cutting attachment will start to rotate immediately.

  • Why does my Husqvarna 224L Trimmer keep stalling?

Your trimmer may keep stalling due to:

    • Incorrect carburetor adjustment: If the machine runs poorly at idle speed, this could be a cause. Contact a qualified dealer/service workshop for optimum carburetor adjustment.
    • Dirty air filter: A dirty air filter can lead to starting problems and loss of engine power.
    • Spark plug issues: Deposits on the spark plug electrodes due to incorrect carburetor adjustment or a dirty air filter can cause operating problems. If the machine is low on power, difficult to start, or runs poorly at idle speed, check the spark plug first. Clean it if dirty and check the electrode gap (0.6-0.7 mm). Replace the spark plug after about a month in operation or earlier if necessary.

For more information, see pages 19 and 20 of the manual.

  • What is the correct fuel-to-oil mixture ratio for the Husqvarna 224L Trimmer?

The Husqvarna 224L Trimmer is equipped with a four-stroke engine, which means it uses gasoline and engine oil separately, not a mixture. You should always use unleaded quality petrol of at least 90 octane (RON) and ensure there is always sufficient oil in the oil tank. For best results, use HUSQVARNA engine oil, or another high-grade engine oil (quality class at least API SG, general viscosity class SAE 10W-40). Never use oil intended for two-stroke engines.

  • How do I adjust the carburetor on my Husqvarna 224L Trimmer?

The basic carburetor settings are adjusted at the factory. For optimum adjustment, you should contact a qualified dealer/service workshop that has a revolution counter. If the cutting attachment rotates at idle speed, you can adjust the idle speed (T) by turning the idle adjustment screw T clockwise until the cutting attachment starts to rotate, then counter-clockwise until it stops. The idle speed is correctly set when the engine runs smoothly in all positions and there is a clear margin to the speed at which the cutting attachment starts to rotate. If the idle speed cannot be adjusted to stop the cutting attachment, contact your dealer/service workshop and do not use the machine until it has been correctly adjusted or repaired.

Ensure the air filter is clean before adjusting the idle speed.

For more information, see pages 19 and 20 of the manual.

  • How often should I clean or replace the air filter on my Husqvarna 224L Trimmer?

The air filter must be regularly cleaned to remove dust and dirt. You should clean the filter every 25 hours of operation, or more regularly if conditions are exceptionally dusty. If the air filter has been in use for a long time, it cannot be cleaned completely and must be replaced with a new one at regular intervals. A damaged air filter must always be replaced. The maintenance schedule also indicates a daily check and replacement if necessary.

  • How do I replace the entire cutting head assembly on my Husqvarna 224L Trimmer?

To replace the entire cutting head assembly:

    1. Ensure the raised section on the drive disc/support flange engages correctly in the center hole of the cutting attachment. Incorrect fitting can result in serious injury.
    2. Fit the correct trimmer guard for use with the trimmer head. Hook the guard onto the fitting on the shaft and secure it with the bolt.
    3. Fit the drive disc on the output shaft.
    4. Turn the blade shaft until one of the holes in the drive disc aligns with the corresponding hole in the gear housing.
    5. Insert the locking pin into the hole to lock the shaft.
    6. To fit the trimmer head, separate its two halves (if applicable for your model), then place the cover and support flange on the output shaft, ensuring the drive disc's guide locates correctly in the cover's center hole.
    7. Fit the nut and tighten it to a torque of 35-50 Nm (3.5-5 kpm) using the socket spanner in the tool kit. Hold the shaft of the spanner as close to the blade guard as possible. To tighten the nut, turn the spanner in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation (left-hand thread).

For other guards and cutting attachments, the process is similar: fit the correct trimmer guard, fit the drive disc, align the blade shaft, insert the locking pin, and screw on the trimmer head/plastic blades in the opposite direction of rotation.

I have a 224l machine, I've been running it with a 2 cycle oil mixture, I see another tank across from the fuel tank, is that an engine oil tank ?

Yes, the Husqvarna 224L is a true 4-cycle trimmer, which means it has a separate engine oil tank that is not mixed with the fuel. Therefore, the tank across from the fuel tank is for engine oil.
