STRINGS AND TUNING MACHINES
All strings should be exchanged as a set when they become dis-
colored, or if you notice any buzzing or loss of tone. When you do
so, replace one string at a time in order to minimize any sudden
change in the tension that is applied to the neck. Since the curva-
ture of the neck may change if you replace the strings with a set
of a different gauge, you may need to readjust not only the neck
but also the string height, intonation, and the angle at which the
tremolo is attached. Make these readjustments as described in the
adjustment manual. (We recommend that you readjust the intona-
tion after each string change, even if you have replaced the strings
with an identical gauge.)
Wind the string 2~3 times around the tuning machine post from
above, ensuring that the string does not cross itself (Fig. 1). About
5~7 cm of the string from the post should be wound (Fig. 2). Since
unwound strings are more likely to slip, wrap the end of the string
around itself as shown (Fig. 3) to prevent slipping.
Tuning machines that have sealed gears are already lubricated,
and do not need further lubrication. On tuning machines that have
a set screw for torque adjustment, you can use a Philips (+) screw-
driver to make fine adjustments in the torque as shown (Fig. 4).
Strings will deteriorate with use, causing buzzing or inaccurate
pitch. Bent, twisted, or damaged strings will also produce buzzing
or decreased sustain, so when replacing a string, make sure that
the new string is not bent, twisted, or damaged.
