About Zoning

A zone is a specified group of fabric-connected devices, also called zone objects.
Any device, or zone object, connected to the fabric can be included in one or more
zones. Each zone object within a zone can communicate only with other zone
objects within the same zone; any device outside of a zone cannot communicate
with zone objects located inside a zone. Once zoning is enabled, if a device is not
explicitly defined in a zone, that device will exist in a zone by itself and be
inaccessible by other devices in the fabric.
Zone objects are grouped into zones and zones are grouped in a zone
configuration. Zones can overlap; that is, a zone object can belong to more than
one zone and a fabric can have multiple zones. A switch can have any number of
zone configurations resident; however, only one configuration can be enabled at a
time.
