IMPORTANT: Remove components in the order listed in this chapter. Reverse the order
to reinstall all components.
If you intend to use the Smart Array 5i Controller for managing external
storage devices only, it is not necessary to remove additional components
before installing and cabling the controller. Go directly to "Installing the Smart
Array 5i Controller," in this chapter.

Removing PCI Expansion Boards

IMPORTANT: Always power down the server before installing a Smart Array 5i Controller.
Remove all expansion boards installed in the PCI expansion area before
removing the center wall and installing the Smart Array 5i Controller. Since
the server is powered down, the procedures in this section can be used for
hot-plug or non-hot-plug expansion boards.
To remove a PCI expansion board:
1. Power down the server. See "Powering Down the Server" in Chapter 3,
"Installing Hardware Options."
2. Remove the access panel. See "Removing the Access Panel" in
Chapter 3, "Installing Hardware Options."
3. Remove any cables connecting the expansion board to the system board.
