Manual Coffee Machines (Barista) FAQ
Question 1 Do I need to regularly descale my coffee machine?
Answer 1 It is critical that you regularly clean & descale your coffee machine to ensure efficient water &
milk frothing dispensing / function.
After continued use, your Espresso Machine may develop a build-up of mineral deposits and therefore
require occasional descaling. We recommend descaling your Espresso Machine every 4-6 months, although
this period will depend on the hardness of water in your local area and frequency of use.
Question 2 I misplaced / accidentally broken a part, where can I buy spare portafilter, Water tanks, Milk
tanks, drip trays etc...?
Answer 2 Contact our Consumer Service Team by UK Telephone: 0800 028 7154 or by e-mail:
BrevilleEurope@newellco.com
they will be able to advise on all spares that are available.
Question 3 Why does the clean light keep illuminating? What shall I do?
Answer 3 If the clean light keeps illuminating, the appliance needs to be descaled. Please go through the
cleaning procedure in the manual and follow the guidelines regarding descaling.
Question 4 What is the correct way to use grind settings?
Answer 4 For freshly roasted beans, we recommend using a medium grind setting. As a guide, start on
grind setting 20. As the coffee beans start to lose their freshness, turn the bean hopper clockwise in small
increments to a finer grind setting to maintain optimum espresso extraction. 'The optimal extraction time
is between 28-30 seconds. If extraction time is above or below this the grinder needs adjusting. Higher
number = coarser grounds = faster extraction. Lower number = finer grounds = slower extraction. See User
manual how to adjust extraction time.
Question 5 Water is leaking from the group head. Can I resolve this?
Answer 5 There are a number of things that make cause the group head to leak. Do not overfill the basket;
too much coffee in the filter basket can prevent water from running. It may result in multiple leakages
from the portafilter and the group head. If this is not the case, there are some check you can do to the
machine. Firstly, make sure the portafilter has been rotated to the full lock position. If this doesn't resolve
the issue, then check if the 58mm seal is not out of position. If it is, remove it gently using a screwdriver,
and put it back in place. Finally, wipe the group head thread and the shower head with a damp cloth. If the
problem still persists, please get in touch with our Consumer Service Team by UK Telephone: 0800 028
7154 or by e-mail: BrevilleEurope@newellco.com they will be able to advise next steps.
Question 6 Water gathers in the drip tray during extraction. How do I resolve this?
Answer 6 If there is a puddle of water within the drip tray, it means the nozzles of the unit are clogged with
limescale. To unclog them, please pour a mixture of water and white vinegar into the water tank; the ratio
is 1:1. Stir 300 ml of water and 300 ml of white vinegar in the water tank and perform the steps from the
instruction manual.
