If you forget the password, you cannot access the computer. Refer to
the Troubleshooting Guide for instructions on clearing passwords.
If the system is equiped with an embedded security device, refer to
"Embedded Security."
ProtectTools Embedded Security combines encryption and password
protection to provide enhanced security for Embedded File System
(EFS) file/folder encryption and secure e-mail with Microsoft
Outlook and Outlook Express. ProtectTools is available for selected
business desktops as Configured-To-Order (CTO) options. It is
intended for HP customers for whom compromised data is the
paramount concern: unauthorized access to data presents a far greater
danger than the loss of the data. ProtectTools uses four passwords:
(F10) Setup—to enter Computer Setup (F10) Utility and
enable/disable ProtectTools
Take Ownership—to be set and used by a system administrator,
who will authorize users and set security parameters
Emergency Recovery Token—to be set by the system
administrator, will permit recovery in the event of computer or
ProtectTools chip failure
Basic User—to be set and used by the end user.
If the end user's password is lost, the encrypted data cannot be
recovered. Therefore, ProtectTools is most safely used when the data
contained on the user's drive is replicated on a system information
system or is regularly backed up.
ProtectTools Embedded Security is a TCPA 1.1-compliant security
chip optionally installed on the system board of selected business
desktops. Each ProtectTools Embedded Security chip is unique and is
bound to a specific computer. Each chip performs key security
processes independent of other computer components (such as
processor, memory or operating system).
