G3 KAI Family Evaluation
Kit Quick Start Guide
This guide will help you get up and running using the
ON Semiconductor G3 KAI family evaluation kits and
SensorStudio software.
Before You Start
•
Evaluation Hardware and Image Sensor
The Evaluation kit consists of an Imager board, FPGA
processor board and a lens mount kit
•
SensorStudio Software
The most recent version can be downloaded at
www.onsemi.com.
•
USB 3.0
USB 3.0 is supported. Data rates over 300 MB/sec are
possible.
•
Camera Link
We support Camera Link medium format at 33 MHz
using the Imperx Framelink series of frame grabbers.
These are available as PCIe X1 for desktops or
ExpressCard54 for laptops. You will also need
a Microtronix A6287 interface board and 2 MDR−SDR
cables.
•
Computer
Windows 7 64 bit. 2+ GHz processor, 8 GB RAM,
USB 3.0. PCIe X1 or EC54 for camera link.
•
Power Supply
12 V DC, 2 A, with 2.1 mm center positive DC power
jack.
•
Cables
2 meter USB 3.0 cable (comes with G2 FPFA board).
Optional MDR−SDR Camera Link cables.
•
Lens Mount Kit
The KAI−43140 kit will need an F type lens mount
which is available in the optional Lens Mount Kit
LENS−MOUNT−KIT−E−GVK.
•
Lens
You will need an F mount lens for the KAI−43140 kit.
Install Software
Install the software by running setup.exe file. Check the
boxes for installing the USB 3.0 drivers if they have never
been installed.
The 64-bit USB 3.0 driver is not digitally signed. For
proper installation, press the F8 key during bootup to access
Advanced Boot Options, and select Disable Driver

EVAL BOARD USER'S MANUAL
If you are using the Imperx Camera Link frame grabber
you will need to get the latest software installer from
www.Imperx.com.
Assemble Evaluation Kit Hardware
•
Camera Link Option:
Install Microtonix A6287 interface board onto FPGA
board's HSMC connector.
•
Lens Mount:
Use the instructions in the Lens Mount Kit to install the
correct back focus spacer and F type lens mount.
•
Plug in Power and Cables:
With the Evaluation Kit powered off, insert the
USB 3.0 cable into your PC. USB3 is needed even if
you are using Camera Link because Camera Link is
only used for image data. USB is still used for control.
Insert the power plug into the receptacle on the
Imager/FPGA board. Turn on the Power. On first power
up the OS will try to associate a driver with the
evaluation kit. This should happen without issue unless
you forgot to disable device driver digital signature
check as mentioned above.
If the driver association passes you will see "Truesense
USB3" in DeviceManager's USB section.
Run SensorStudio
•
Shortcut
To properly configure the shortcut icon for
SensorStudio, right click, choose properties and then
select the compatibility tab. Set the OS for your OS and
enable "run as admin".
•
Launch Program
Double click the SensorStudio desktop icon to launch
the software.
•
Open Plugin
Click the G3 button in the upper toolbar. This should
bring up the G3KAIFamilyPlugin.
