Model 4024 Common Control Unit OVERVIEW The Series 4000 Communications Control System provides a means for one or more dispatchers to efficiently control a radio system composed of up to 24 radio channels. It is suitable for use in public safety applications, such as police and fire communications, as well as public service applications, such as utility and industrial communications.

Introduction COMMON CONTROL UNIT The Common Control unit is the central interface that routes signals between radio channels and dispatch consoles. The Model 4024 contains up to 16 modular circuit cards. It handles up to 24 radio channels and up to eight dispatch console positions. The Model 4008B contains up to eight modular circuit cards.

Console Panel Overview The field of 60 keys across the upper portion of the Desktop Console is the channel control section. The layout and function of the keys in the channel control section are also tailored to your specific system by using the Series 4000 Console Programming System. Usually the channel legend plaque above a column of keys indicates that those keys are used to control that channel.

Button Functions Transmit (XMIT) Depressing and holding this button allows you to transmit on all selected channels. This is paralleled with the optional foot-operated PTT switch. Whenever your console is transmitting, this button’s red LED indicator will be illuminated. Monitor (MON) Pressing this button will cause the selected channel to disable its coded squelch (PL) decoding, thus allowing you to monitor for activity on the channel prior to transmitting.

Button Functions will show the route of the automatically switched audio. This button may be used to override the automatic routing. Priority Marker (PRI’TY MARKER) Pressing this button enables the priority marker for the currently selected channel. This function will emit a brief tone over the radio channel every few seconds while radio traffic is idle.

Button Functions Increment Group (INC GRP) This button causes the Group Number of the LTR radio connected to the selected channel to be incremented by one. The system and resulting group number will be displayed. The System Number is unchanged. Pressing this switch is functionally equivalent to pressing the button on the radio panel.

Button Functions Monitor On/Off (MON) This button toggles the Monitor function on the radio channel. When the radio acknowledges the command, the button’s green LED will reflect the state of the function; green LED on indicates the function is on; green LED off indicates the function is off. Button Functions Wild Card On/Off (WC ON/WC OFF) This function allows remote control of miscellaneous equipment at the base-station site. This is often used to turn on or off generators, beacons, and similar on-site equipment. Usually, the label of such buttons will reflect the equipment it controls. On Hook / Off Hook (ON HOOK/OFF HOOK) This button is found on Telephone line channels only.

Button Functions Alert (ALERT) button is used to manually generate one of four alert tones on the channel ALERT currently selected on the Dispatch Console. The alert is generated while the button is depressed. If no digits are entered on the keypad prior to pressing the button, the alert is a steady tone.

The Models 4018 and 4118 consoles have a built-in paging encoder with features similar to the Zetron Model 25 encoder. The following features and buttons may therefore be present. To help distinguish between recorded and live audio, a short, distinctive beep precedes each IRR playback and a different beep is heard when the IRR playback is stopped. The playback message pointer is initially set to the beginning of the most recently recorded message and can be manipulated with the REWIND and RESET functions.

On tabletop consoles, the handset/headset earpiece volume may be adjusted using the slider under the front of the dispatch console. Operation Prior to adding a telephone party to the patch, you must first connect with the telephone line using your telephone instrument and dial the desired telephone number. After you have informed the party, press the button, so that the line becomes part of the patch, and PATCH you may hang-up your telephone instrument.

Operation CHANNEL IRR OPERATION (MODELS 4018 & 4118 ONLY) Note that this feature is only available with the Universal Dual Channel Card (950-9819 or 950-9820). On this DCC, each channel is equipped with its own Instant Recall Recorder. This IRR can store 64 seconds of audio on each channel for each megabyte of installed memory.

Operation Setting up a Phone Conference When one telephone is active and a second telephone is taken off-hook, the first telephone is automatically put in the Hold mode. If the first telephone is returned to the active mode, both telephones will be active and the receive and transmit audio is routed to both telephones. This can be repeated with as many additional telephones channels as are available.

Operation Reserve Selective Calling Mode When a valid ANI is received, the console will beep and display the number of the calling unit bracketed by dashes (-XXXXXX-). If the number is longer than six digits, only the last six digits are retained. If the calling unit’s channel is muted, it will automatically be unmuted to allow the audio from the calling party to be heard (this can be changed with CPS).

Operation The emergency ANI operator alert temporarily stops when a call is received on any channel so that the call can be heard. The alert resumes when all call activity stops. This behavior continues until all emergency ANIs have been reviewed. Non-emergency ANIs When a valid non-emergency ANI is received, it is placed into the ANI buffer.

Operation Dispatch Console is labeled and is a square, gray colored component with a SW1 CLK SET round, black dome. The first time the switch is depressed, the seconds-unit on the time display will CLOCK SET begin to flash. The seconds-unit may be adjusted up or down using the CHANNEL VOLUME knob.

Operation DIAGNOSTICS MESSAGES In the event that the continuous system diagnostics finds a problem, the time/message display of the appropriate consoles will display a message.
