These heaters use up to 27% less energy than your old storage heaters. They will help you to take control of your heating, be warmer and reduce your energy bills.
Because they are more efficient, they work in a different way to standard storage heaters and can take a bit of time to get used to.
Dimplex Quantum storage heaters charge overnight, usually between 12:00pm and 7:00am. This is when energy is cheapest on your Economy tariff.
During the day the heaters release the stored energy. Because the heaters are so well insulated there is less heat lost than with traditional storage heaters. Rather than 'leaking' heat, you now use the digital timer to control stored heat to be released into the room.
You choose a room temperature and the times of day when you want the heater to come on using the controls. The inbuilt thermostat will turn the heater off when the room is the right temperature. Any unused heat is then kept for later.
At midnight each night the heater will automatically work out how much cheap electricity to store overnight for the following day. This calculation is based on a 3-day rolling average, so try not to change the settings for the first few days while the heater is learning.
The heater can produce a smell for the first few days of use, and rooms should be well ventilated during this time.
Only a small amount of heat comes from the outer case. The majority of the heat comes from the fan that pushes hot air out from the vents at the bottom of the heater.
When you touch the outside of the heater it won't feel hot. This is normal.
Other parts may get very hot. Especially by the air outlet at the bottom. That is why it is important not to put anything against or on top of the storage heaters. Always leave a gap of 30cm in front to prevent a fire hazard.
You must also leave a gap between the heater and curtains. Curtains must not hang within 7.5cm from the top of the heater.
NEVER COVER THE HEATER OR BLOCK THE AIR OUTLETS
This can cause high temperatures or the heater to cut-out.
NEVER:
Quantum storage heaters have a digital display and push button controls. It's important to set them up correctly so that you keep your home at a comfortable temperature.
Make sure your heaters are switched on at the wall. Leave them on all the time, including overnight. Otherwise, they won't charge. Leaving them switched on doesn't use any more electricity.
The heaters use night-time (cheaper rate) electricity to charge. This means that the first time you turn them on they will not heat up until after the first night-time charging period.
The controls are on the top right of the heater under a flap.
Note: there is a delay of up to a minute on the fan operation when switching to 'Heating On' or 'Heating off'. This is normal and does not represent a fault.
If the correct time isn't already showing:
*The time is automatically adjusted in Spring and Autumn at the changes between Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and British Summer Time (BST). It is recommended to check the time every couple of months and adjust if necessary.
When on the main screen, turn the dial to set the target temperature.
Turning to the left lowers the temperature and to the right raises it.
When the room reaches the set temperature, the heater will turn off.
Modifying temperature settings can be found here:
There are four timer modes which decide when the heater will be on.
Press 'menu' then turn the dial to highlight 'timer mode' and press to select.
Select the timer mode you want. If you choose holiday mode, the temperature will be kept to 7°C while you are away.
Select timer mode by turning and pressing down the dial. The list of the four timer modes will be shown. The pre-set options are in the table over.
Heating period 1 | Heating period 2 | Heating period 3 | Heating period 4 | |
| 06:30 - 09:30 | 11:00 - 13:00 | 15:00 - 17:00 | 18:00 - 22:00 |
| 06:00 - 08:30 | 17:00 - 22:00 | N/A | N/A |
| 08:00 - 21:00 | N/A | N/A | N/A |
| No heating periods – constant minimum temperature maintained |
*Timings are for example purpose only
You can choose any of these options or you can select modify to change the timings of any of these programmes, so they suit you. The default settings are shown in the table above.
If the heater is in heating off mode but you need heat, pressing advance turns it to heating on. It will bring forward the start of the next time-period.
This can leave less heat for later in the day, so try not to use this very often. It can be useful if you are in and out at different times than you have it set up for, for example if you get home earlier than normal.
Pressing advance when heating on is showing will turn the heater off until the next time-period. Use this if you feel it is too warm, or you are going out.
There is also a boost option. Find this by pressing the menu and scrolling to boost. This switches on a heating element. You can choose the temperature you want and the number of minutes to have it on.
The heat for the boost will usually draw from stored heat. If there is not enough stored heat, the heater will draw energy from peak rate electricity.*
* If you live in a high-rise block that has communal heating. This will be an extra charge that is not included in your communal heating charge. This will be charged by your own energy provider.
Each timer is broken down into 4 definable 'Heating On' periods and temperatures per day. When Modify is chosen, 'Heating On' period 1 of 4 for the current day is displayed.
The current day will be highlighted. Rotate dial to highlight 'Modify', press dial to select. The current day will be highlighted. The default temperature will be set to 21 degrees.
Select and change each option by rotating and pressing the dial.
Note: Once modified a Timer Mode must be selected if you want to begin using it.
Modifying timer settings can be found here:
To save time when modifying a Timer Mode, the Advance button can be used to copy and paste settings.
Individual heating periods from one day or every heating period from a day can be copied to another day.
Q | Why were these heaters chosen to replace standard storage heaters? |
A | Because they save on energy costs and will provide more heat for your home. |
Q | Do all of my old heaters need to be replaced? |
A | Yes. The new heaters are much more efficient and made to the latest energy standards. They use less energy and are cheaper to run. |
Q | I don't want heaters in all of the rooms. |
A | We work out the heating needs for the whole property. If some rooms don't have heating it will affect the performance of the heating in the whole property. |
Q | Why is the outside of the heater not getting hot? |
A | The heat comes from the vents at the bottom. The outside of the heater will not get hot. This is because the main body of the heater is insulated to a high standard, making it more efficient. |
Q | Why is there a smell from the heater? |
A | This is normal and can happen in the first two days of using the heater. This is due to the new materials or dust that has settled inside while the heater is in the factory. |
Q | There is a smell coming from my heater, but it isn't new. |
A | If you have recently decorated this could be caused by solvents and thinners. It could also be caused by using air fresheners, burning candles or aerosol polishes. If you are worried or think that the smell is electrical burning, please book an emergency repair with our contractor. Call Ridgewater Energy - 01202 612726 |
Q | By ventilating the property in the first few days, does that mean windows should be left open? If windows are left open does that affect the 'learning' of the storage heaters? |
A | Slight smoking may occur in the first 24-48 hours of the new storage heater being installed as the oil protecting the elements burns off. Ventilation is required to allow for any smoke to leave the room. This may affect the learning of the storage heater, however it will continue to learn from a 3-day average. |
Q | What is the maximum room temperature setting? |
A | The maximum is 26°C |
Q | What is the normal room temperature setting? |
A | Normal room temperature is 21°C |
Q | What is the minimum room temperature setting? |
A | The minimum room temperature setting is 16°C. However, the lowest comfortable heat we would suggest is 18°C |
Q | Can I programme each heater to a different temperature? |
A | Yes. Each heater can be set to different temperatures and with different timings. For example, if you spend your evenings in the lounge, you could have the heater set to a higher temperature there. Please see 'Modifying a Timer Mode'. |
Q | I'm going away. What should I do? |
A | Select the away option using the timer mode. This will keep the temperature to 7°C and make sure the heating is on when you get back. |
Q | Can I use my portable heater as well? |
A | Try not to use any other heaters. This will confuse the Quantum heater, which monitors the temperature of the room then adjusts the output. It is better to turn up the temperature on the heater and store more heat. Or use the advance or boost options. |
Q | Why has the fan stopped running? |
A | It is normal for the fan to stop running. This happens when the room has reached the set temperature. |
Q | Why are there clicking sounds? |
A | Clicking sounds are normal and due to temperature changes inside the heater. |
Q | Why is the wall above the heater discoloured? |
A | This can happen to some types of paint or decorating materials above any types of heaters. |
Q | There are sooty marks above and to the sides of the heater. |
A | This is not a heater fault. Household dust, burning candles or smoking can cause sooty deposits. Wipe off with a damp cloth. |
Q | What do I do if the cable from the switch is damaged? |
A | Contact our repairs service as an emergency. Never try to repair it yourself. Call Ridgewater Energy - 01202 612726 |
Q | Can I boost the heat? |
A | Yes. But you will be charged an extra amount on top of any communal heating charges (if you have used all of your stored energy). The boost function can be activated at any time. It can be set to 30-minute intervals, with a maximum of 4 hours per boost. |
Q | The heater isn't working. |
A | This could be due to the room temperature being higher than the thermostat setting. |
Q | The heater isn't working, and the temperature isn't higher than the thermostat setting. |
A | Have you left something against the heater? It will cut out for safety reasons if it overheats. |
Q | The heater isn't working, and the temperature isn't higher than the thermostat setting and I haven't left the windows/doors open. |
A | Book a repair with Ridgewater Energy
|
Q | Should I turn the heater off when the weather is warmer? |
A | No. The heater will not turn on unless the temperature drops. If you turn it off you will need to set up the time zones again. |
Q | If there is a power-cut will I need to set it up again? |
A | Yes. Please refer to the manufacturer's guidance sheet provided to do this. |
Q | When the clocks go back/forward will the time reset automatically? |
A | Yes. The storage heaters are pre-programmed to mirror daylight-saving time |
Q | The heater isn't charging overnight. |
A | The heater will only charge if needed. Your energy provider may also control when it recharges, so that it charges at periods of low energy demand. Make sure it is switched on at the wall. |
Q | How do I clean the heater? |
A | To clean, wipe the heater with a dry cloth. When it is completely cold it can be wiped with a damp cloth. Do not use cleaning powders or furniture polish. |
Q | The heater isn't on. |
A | ![]() Make sure BOTH the electrical supplies next to the heater are turned on. If they are both on, book a repair. |
Q | Does it use electricity if I leave it switched on? |
A | Make sure BOTH the electrical supplies next to the heater are turned on at all times. If not, it won't be able to charge. It will not use any more electricity. |
Q | Will my heating bill be cheaper? |
A | The heater will use up to 27% less energy than your previous storage heater. However, your energy cost will depend on your usage and the charges defined by your energy supplier. |
Q | Can I lock the controls? |
A | If you need to lock the controls so that the settings cannot be changed then activate the child lock.
