Troubleshooting - Chart
Observation
1. Compressor will
not start

Installation and Start-up
Possible Cause
Power off
Current overload open
Oil safety switch open
Loose electrical
connections or faulty wiring
Compressor motor burnout
Blown valve plate or
cylinder head gasket
Leaky valve plates or worn
seats
Leaky suction valves
Broken connecting rods or
pistons
Cylinder head bolts not
properly torqued.
Liquid refrigerant floodback
or flooded start
Low pressure switch erratic
in operation
Insufficient refrigerant in
system
Suction service valve closed
Insufficient water flowing
through condenser or
clogged condenser
Discharge service valve not
fully open
Air in system
Faulty pressure stats
Dirt or restriction in tubing
to pressure stat
Condenser capacity reduced
by refrigerant over-charge
accompanied by high
discharge pressure
Plugged filter-drier

Remedy
Check main switch, fuses, and
wiring
Reset manually
Reset manually
Tighten connections. Check wiring
and rewire if necessary.
Check and replace compressor if
defective.

Replace valve plate assembly
Pump down, remove cylinder head,
and examine valves and seats.
Replace if necessary.
Replace compressor
a. Replace gaskets
b. Retorque cylinder head bolts
(59 lb-ft for all models)
See No. 7 (Flooding)
a. Check tubing to switch to see
if clogged or crimped
b. Check settings of switch
Add refrigerant
Open valve
Adjust water regulating valve to
condenser, or clean condenser
Open valve
Purge
Repair or replace
Check and clean tubing
Remove excess refrigerant
Replace filter-drier
