Base Memory

The POST of the BIOS w ill determine the amount of base (or conv entional) memory installed in the
sy stem.
The v alue of the base memory is ty pically 512 K for sy stems w ith 512 K memory installed on the
motherboard, or 640 K for sy stems w ith 640 K or more memory installed on the motherboard.

Extended Memory

The BIOS determines how much ex tended memory is present during the POST.
This is the amount of memory located abov e 1 MB in the CPU's memory address map.
