9000 Enterprise Switch 8-slot Chassis and

16-slot Chassis

Read this document before you attempt to install the CoreBuilder

9000

Enterprise Switch 8-slot chassis (Model Number 3CB9E8) or the 16-slot

chassis (Model Number 3CB9E16).

This guide is intended for the system or network administrator who is

responsible for installing and managing the network hardware.

WARNING: The CoreBuilder 9000 chassis must be installed, removed, or

replaced only by trained service personnel. Do not attempt to install,

remove, or replace a CoreBuilder 9000 chassis if you have not had the

proper training from 3Com. For information about 3Com's training

offerings, call 1-800-NET-3COM, then press option 3. Outside the United

States, contact your local 3Com office.

This document explains how to unpack and install a CoreBuilder 9000

8-slot chassis (Figure 1) and 16-slot chassis (Figure 2).

WARNING: You can install the CoreBuilder 9000 chassis on a table or a

shelf, or into a rack. To minimize the risk of personal injury or equipment

damage, 3Com recommends that at least two people perform a chassis

installation.

No blank faceplate covers these slots. After you receive the chassis, remove the faceplate from power supply slot 4 to help make chassis installation easier.

Page 13 Chassis Quick Installation Guide WARNING: Safety regulations state that the selected table, shelf, or rack must be able to support at least three times the weight of a fully loaded chassis. A fully loaded 8-slot chassis weighs approximately 71.7 kg (158 lb). Therefore, the selected table, shelf, or rack must support at least 215.1 kg (474 lb).
Page 14 Chassis Quick Installation Guide Figure 8 Rack Types Bolt the rack to the floor. Brace the top of the rack against the wall. Make certain that the rack is properly aligned and squared. Use a framing tool to ensure that the rack is squared. To help support the chassis while you install it in a rack, install the mounting shelves that are shipped with your chassis.
Page 15 Chassis Quick Installation Guide If you want to use an optional cable management device, install it above or below the chassis (depending on which type of device you choose). You can install the chassis in the rack either before or after you install a cable management device.

Page 17 Chassis Quick Installation Guide Using the Chassis Rack-mount Template Use the paper rack-mount chassis template (which is an accurate copy of the chassis rack-mount flange) to help you position the mounting shelves and the CoreBuilder 9000 chassis when you install them into a rack. See Figure 2.

Page 22 Chassis Quick Installation Guide Installing the Chassis in a Rack Using Rack-Mount Clip Nuts Follow these steps to mount the chassis in a rack when you use rack-mount clip nuts. Not all racks require that you use rack-mount clips. Use whatever method of rack-mount equipment that you have to meet installation requirements in a rack.

Page 25 Chassis Quick Installation Guide 3 Position the chassis on its side so that you can access the bottom of the chassis. 4 Remove the four feet and the four screws from the hardware kit. 5 Using a flat-blade screwdriver, screw the feet to the bottom of the chassis.

Follow the Management Device manufacturer’s suggested installation procedures. The Ring Cable Management Devices (Model Numbers 3C95CM1 and 3C95CM2) manage module cables from the top or bottom of the 8-slot chassis and the 16-slot chassis.

Page 28 Chassis Quick Installation Guide 3 Using a Phillips screwdriver or flat-blade screwdriver, secure the ring cable management device to the rack with the screws that are provided (four 10-24 x 5/8 inch screws) and with the rack-mount clips. a If you use the rack-mount clips, attach the nylon flat washers to the back of the screws (to protect the face of the ring cable management device), and place the rack-mount clips on the rack rail.
