Introduction Scope of Service Manual This service manual is intended for service engineers certified by Shimadzu and describes maintenance procedures for SPD-16 UV-VIS detector used in Shimadzu liquid chromatographs. Actual maintenance work should only be performed by a service engineer that has received training for that instrument.

Indicates information provided to improve product performance. Indicates the location of related reference information. Product Applications Do NOT use the instrument for any other application other than high performance liquid chromatography. Using this instrument for any other purpose could cause accidents. SPD-16...
Page 11
Not doing so could cause poisoning or fire. Install the instrument near a sink or other source of tap water. If solvent gets into the eyes or onto the skin, flush it away immediately. SPD-16...
Page 12
• Air currents from heating or air conditioning equipment are not directed onto the instrument. • The instrument is not exposed to direct sunlight. • There is no vibration. • Humidity is maintained within 20 to 85 %. • There is no condensation. SPD-16...
Page 13
Otherwise, fire, electric shock or malfunction could occur. If the cord is damaged, immediately contact your Shimadzu representative. Take measures to prevent the instrument from falling in the event of an earthquake or other disaster. Strong vibrations could cause the instrument to fall over, resulting in injury.
Page 14
Always wear protective gloves when handling any toxic or biologically infectious samples. Do NOT bend any tubing of the instrument at the same position repeatedly. Doing so could cause the tubing to rupture or crack, which could result in solvent spraying out. SPD-16...
Page 15
Take the following measures in the event of a power outage. Turn the power to the instrument OFF. When power supply resumes, check in accordance with 1.1.1 Preparation Connectors at the Rear of the Instrument (left side), and use the standard startup procedure to start the instrument. SPD-16...

Disposal Precautions When disposing of the instrument, contact your Shimadzu representative. If you dispose them yourself, do so in accordance with the processing standards determined by law, separately from general industrial waste and household garbage. Static Electricity Precautions Static Electricity Precautions Liquid chromatograph (LC) uses flammable organic solvent(s) as the mobile phase.
Page 17
Ignition of flammable If this happens and an electrical conductor is brought substances within a certain distance of the container, an electrical discharge will occur, releasing thermal energy which will ignite any flammable gas of sufficient density in the vicinity. SPD-16...

If the liquid to be drained into the waste container is virtually non-conductive S/m or less), it will be necessary to add properly conductive, and therefore safe, liquid to the tank. This conductive liquid may be added beforehand. SPD-16...
Page 20
If it is not possible to use a conductive waste liquid container, take the following precautions: Ensure that the end of the inflow tubing is always submerged inside the container. Also, place some type of grounded metal object, such as a ground wire connected to the instrument, into the liquid. SPD-16...

Item SPD-16 Zero adjustment Auto zero function, baseline shift function Polarity switching Possible Performs wavelength scanning with flow stopped. Data stored in three Wavelength scanning function files, one of which stores background. Background is subtracted from sample scans. File data is not saved up (lost when power is turned OFF).

The filter is inserted in front of the slit at the 371-700 nm range for model SPD-16. After the light beam passes through the slit, it is reflected and focused by mirror M2 and hits a holographic grating of 1600 grooves per millimeter, where it is separated into its spectrum. The light separated by the grating emerges as parallel light beams that are reflected by mirror M3 and are wide enough to straddle and enter both of the sample and reference cells.

A flow-through type structure. The reference cell is simply a hole that lets light pass through. Then wavelength is checked using the bright line of D2 lamp. The checked value and the value stored in the memory are compared and CHECK GOOD is displayed in the screen if they are equal. SPD-16 Light path schematic SPD-16...
