Deterge nt additives in the oil wi ll make fresh
oil look dark after the engine has been run-
ning for a short time . This is norma l and is not
a reason to change the oil more often than
recommended.
Damag e or malfun ction s due to lack of
mainten ance
It is essent ial that you change your oil at the
recommended intervals using only engine oil
that complies with Audi oi l standard
VW 502 00. Your Limited New Vehicle War-
ranty does not cover damage or malfunctions
due to failure to follow recommended mainte-
nance and use requirements as set forth in
the Audi Owner's Manual and Warranty&
Maintenance book let . Your dealer will have to
deny warranty coverage un less you present to
the dealer proof in the form of Service or Re-
pair Orders that all scheduled maintenance
was performed in a timely manner.
Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade-
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its moving ports.
I n order to prov ide effective lubr ication and
cooling of internal engine components, all in-
ternal comb ustion engines consume a certain
amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from
engine to engine and may change significantly
over the life of the eng ine. Typically, engines
with a specif ied break-in period (see
c::;,
page 157)
consume more oil during the
break-in per iod than they consume after oil
consumption has stabilized .
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil con-
sumpt ion depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil, the RPM (revolutions per m inute) at
which the engine is operated, the ambient
temperature and road condit ions. Furthe r fac-
tors are the amo unt of oil dil ution from wate r
condensation or fuel residue and the oxida-
tion level of the oi l. As any engine is subject to
wear as mileage bui lds up, the oil consump-
tion may increase over t ime until replacement
of worn components may become necessary.
Wi t h all these variab les coming into play, no
standard rate of oil consumption can be es-
tab li shed or specified. There is no alte rnative
to regular and frequent checking of the oil lev-
el, see
Note .

Tips
- The oil pressure warning display.
is
not an indicator of the oil level. Do not
rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, pref-
erably each time you refue l, and always
before going on a long trip.
- If you have the impressio n your engine
consumes excessive amoun t s of oil, we
recommend that you consult your Audi
dealer to have the cause of your concern
properly diagnosed. Keep in mind that
the accurate measurement of oil con-
sumption requ ires great care and may
take some t ime . Your Audi dealer has in-
struct ions about how to measure oil con-
sumption accurately.
