MIDI CONNECTION EXAMPLES
1 PortaSound — Standard Keyboard
If you find the PortaSound's mini keys somewhat difficult
to use and would prefer to play the PSS-780
from a
standard-sized
keyboard,

PSS-780
Set the PSS-780 to MIDI MODE 00, and make sure that
the receive and transmit channels correspond on both
instruments. You can now play the PortaSound from the
external keyboard.
Besides, you can use the front panel
controls of the PSS-780 to change any settings as desired.
If you have a touch sensitive standard keyboard and want
to play the PortaSound with velocity data for more ex-
pression, select MIDI MODE 99 instead. Note, however,
that you will not be able to use the front panel controls
in this mode.
PortaSound — Portable Remote Keyboard
This simple connection allows you to play the PortaSound
from a remote keyboard.

Set MIDI MODE to 99, especially when using a shoulder
keyboard such as the SHS-10 or SHS-200.
You can now
play the superior sounds of the PSS-780 from the remote
keyboard.
3 PortaSound — External Drum Pads
For a particularly authentic percussion feeling, we re-
commend connection of external drum pads such as the
Yamaha Electronic Percussion Set DD-5.

Set the DD-5 MIDI output channel to 16 and the Porta-
Sound MIDI MODE to 99, then play the excellent PSS-780
percussion sounds from the DD-5 — complete with dy-
namics for the breathtaking realism of an actual drum set!
PortaSound - Tone Generators
An even richer sound and more complex performance
capabilities for both voices and rhythm can be achieved
by connecting the PortaSound PSS-780 to one or more
external tone generators and rhythm machines — partic-
ularly if they have multi-timbral capabilities such as the
Yamaha TX81Z
or TX802 and the RX8 rhythm composer.
