ALUMINUM FOIL TEST
This is a general test of transducer function. If the test
indicates a potential malfunction, proceed with "inspect
and
1.
2.
3.
Test the Transducers."
Fill the tank with water.
Turn the unit ON.
Cut a piece of standard weight household aluminum
foil large enough to cover the bottom of the tank.
Submerge the aluminum foil in the water, laying the
foil on the bottom of the tank.
Set a cycle time of 30 seconds and press the
START button.
When the cycle ends, remove the aluminum foil
from the tank.
Hold the piece of foil up to a light. If the unit is
operating properly, the sonic action should have
produced
visible pin holes randomly
distributed
across the piece of aluminum foil. if a section of the
foil remained intact, it is likely that a transducer is
malfunctioning. Determine under which transducer
that section of foil was positioned and inspect the
transducer
banks
with "Inspect and
Test the
Transducers."
INSPECT AND TEST THE TRANSDUCERS
»
DO NOT RUN the generators with-
out the transducer cables attached.
Doing so can blow the internal fuses
in the generators.
e
Prevent a transducer cable from
contacting a ground while the gener-
ator is operating (like the chassis of
the unit). Doing so can blow the in-
ternal fuses in the generators.
NOTE >
The tank MUST be at room temperature
when
this measurement
is taken.
Otherwise,
an incorrect reading
will
1.
result.
Remove
the transducer
cable
(BNC-type
connector) from the back of one generator.
SHOCK HAZARD. Transducers can re-
lain a charge of several hundred volts.
When shorting the center conductor, use
an insulated tool such as one probe of
the multimeter.
Otherwise,
electrical
shock may result.
At the
piug
end
of the cable,
short the center
conductor to the outside sleeve of the connector.
Maintain the short for about 1 minute. This will
ground any residual charge left in the transducers.
Obtain a FLUKE
Model 87 meter. Set it to the
capacitance scale as follows:
a.
Turn the selector switch of the meter to the
»))) © (— position.
b.
Press the blue button to switch to capacitance
measurement.
*
The display shows NF in the lower right
comer.
Touch the RED ( V Q
) probe to the center
pin of the connector.
Touch
the
BLACK
(COM)
probe to the outside sleeve of the
connector. The meter automatically ranges and
displays mF in the lower right corner.
