4.2.3 Carriage Assembly
Carriage assembly consists of a four-phase stepping motor, band actuator, viscous
damper, and carriage with linear bearings. The assembly is controlled by a special
driving circuit which achieves an average positioning time of 70ms. In addition to
high speed, the structure of the assembly gives increased reliability.

If the disks do not rotate, the heads rest on the disk surface Therefore, during main-
tenance or when transporting the drive, the carriage must be locked to protect the
heads.
