Ch e ck ing and Filling
Using the proper engine oil is impo rtant for the
functionality and service life of the engine. Your
engine was facto ry-filled with a high-quality oil
which can usually be used throughout the entire
year.

Note
Your Limited New Vehicle War ranty does not
cover damage or malfunctions due to failure
to follow recommended maintenance and use
requirements as set forth in the Audi Owner's
Manual and Warran ty & Maintenance booklet.
- Use only a high quality eng ine oil t hat ex-
pressly complies with the Audi oil qua lity
standard specified for your vehicle's engine .
Using any ot her oil can cause serious engine
dam age.
- Do not mix any lubricants or other addit ives
into the engine oil. Doing so can cause en-
gine damage.

Tips
If you need to add oil and there is none availa-
ble t hat meets t he Audi oil quality standard
your eng ine requi res, you may add a tot al of
no more t han 0. 5 quart/li t er of a high-quality
"synthe ti c"oil that meets t he following speci-
fications.
- AC EA A3 or API SM wit h a viscosity grade of
SAE 0W-30, SAE SW-30 or SAE SW-40.

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade-
quate amoun t of oil to lubricate and cool all of
its moving par ts.
In order to provide effective lubr ication and cool-
ing of internal engine components, all interna l
combustion engines consume a cert ain amount
of oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to en-
gine and may change significant ly over the life of
the eng ine . Typically, eng ines with a specified
206
break-in period (see
q
page 188)
consume more
oil during the break-in period than they consume
after oil consumption has stab ilized.
Under normal cond itions, the rat e of oil con-
sumption depends on the quality and viscosity of
the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the engine is operated, the amb ient tem-
perature and road condit ions. Further facto rs are
the amount of oil dilution from wate r condensa-
tion or fue l resid ue and the oxidation level of the
oil. As any engine is subject to wear as mileage
builds up, the oil consumption may increase over
ti me until replacement of worn components may
become necessary.
With all these variables coming into play, no
standard rate of oil consumption can be estab-
lished or spec ified . The re is no alte rnative to reg-
ular and freq uent che cking of t he oil level, see
Note .

Driving wit h an insufficient oil level is likely to
cause severe damage to the engine.

Tips
- The oil pressure warning display.
is not
an indicator of the oil level. Do not rely on
it. Instead, check the oil level in your en-
gine at regular intervals, preferably each
time you refuel, and always befo re going
on a long trip.
- If you have the impress ion your engine con-
sumes excessive amou nts of oil, we recom-
mend that you consult your Audi dea ler to
