Tips
Always replace child rest raints that were in-
stalled in a vehicle dur ing a crash. Damage to
a child rest raint that is not visible could cause
it t o f ail in another collision situ ation.
Advanced front airbag system and children
Your vehicle is equipped with an "Advanced Air -
bag System" in compliance with United States
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS)
208 as applicable at the time your vehicle was
manufactured.
The Advanced Airbag system in your vehicle has
been certified to meet the " low-risk" requ ire-
ments for 3- and 6- year-old children on the pas-
senger side and small adults on the driver side.
The low risk deployment criteria are intended to
reduce the risk of injury throug h interaction with
the airbag t hat can occur, for examp le, by being
too close to the st eering wheel and instrumen t
panel when t he airbag inflates. In addit ion, t he
syst em has been cert ified to comply with the
"s uppression" requirements of the Safety Stand-
ard, to turn off the front airbag for infa nts up to
12 months who are restra ined on the front pas-
senger seat in chi ld restraints that are listed in
the Standard.
Even tho ugh your vehicle is equi pped with an Ad-
vanced Airbag system, a child should always ride

in the seat properly restrained fo r its age and
size. The airbag on the passenger side makes the
f ront seat a potent ially dangerous place for a
child to ride. The front seat is not the safest place
for a child in a forward-fac ing child safety seat. It
can be a very dangerous place for an infant or a
larger child in a rearward-fac ing seat.
Advanced Airbags and the weight-sensing
mat in the front seat
The Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle de-
tects the presence of an infant or child in a child
rest raint on the front passenger seat using the
weight-sensing mat in the seat cushion and the
sensor below the safety belt latch on the front
passenger seat that measures the tension on the
safety belt.
The we ight-sensing mat measures total weight of
the child and the child safety seat and a child
blanket on the front passenger seat. The we ight
on the front passenger seat is related to the de-
sign of the child rest raint and its "footpr int", t he
size and shape of the bottom of the child re-
str aint as it sit s on t he seat. The weight of a child
restrain t and its "foo t pr int " vary fo r different
kinds of child restr aints and fo r t he diffe rent
models of the same kind of chi ld restraint offered
by chi ld restraint man ufact urers.
The we ight ranges f or the individu al types, makes
and mode ls of chi ld rest raints t hat t he NHTSA
has specified in the Safety Standard toget her

ical 1 year-old child have been stored in the con-
trol unit of the Advanced Airbag System. When a
child restra int is being used on the front passen-
ger seat with a typical 1 year-old child, the Ad-
vanced Airbag System compa res the we ight
measured by the we ight sensing mat with the in-
f ormat ion st ored in the electr onic cont rol un it .
The electr onic cont rol unit also registe rs the ten-
sion on the front passenger safety belt. The ten-
sion on the safety belt fo r t he front passenger
seat w ill be diff erent for an adul t who is properly
using t he safety belt as compare d to the t ension
on the belt when it is used to attach a child re-
stra int to the seat. The sensor below the latch for
