OPERATION
IMPORTANT N OTE: M anyDVDplayers havea default
setting thatdoesnotpasslhmughthe DTSdata,even
though the machine iscapable of doingso.If your
DVDplayer hasthe "DTSDigital Out"logobut does
nottriggerDTSplayback i n theA\/R335, change the
player's settings inthe"Audio" o r "Bitstream" configu
rationmenusothatDTSplayback i s enabled. The
method fordoingthiswillvarywitheachplayer: i n
somecases, the propermenuchoicewillbe "Original,"
whileinothersit winbe "DTS," C onsult the owner's
manual for yourplayer to findthe specificinformation
to findthepropersetting.
Selectinga DigitalSource
Toutilizeeither d igitalmode, y ou musthaveproperly
connected a digitalsource to theAVR335. Connect
thedigitaloutputs fromDVDplayers, HDTV receivers,
satellite systems o r CDplayers to the Opticalor
CoaxialInputs i"1!t_"1_.
Inolderto provide a
backup signal a nda source foranalog stereo recording,
theanalog outputs provided o n digital source equipment
should alsobeconnected t o theirappropriate inputs on
theAVR 335 rearpanel ( e.g., c onnect t heanalog stareo
audiooutput f roma DVD to theDVD AudioInputs (_)
onthe marpanel w henyouconnect t he saurce's
digital o utputs).
Ifyou havenotalready configured aninputtora digital
source usingtile on screen menus as shown on page
18, firstselectthe inputusingthe remote or front
panel c ontrols, asoullinedinthismanual. Next,select
thedigitalsource bypressing the Digital Select
Button qi_[]
andthenusingthe A/V
Buttons
on the remote or the ,/,
SelectorButtons
[]
on thefrontpanel t o choose anyof the 0 PT Z -
CAL or COAXIAL
inputs, as theyappear i nthe
UpperDisplayLine []
or on-screen display. When
thedigitalsource is playing, theA\/R335 will automat-
icaliy detectwhichtypeof digitaldatastream is being
decoded anddisplay thatinformation i nthe Upper
DisplayLine [].
DigitalBitstream Indications
When a digitalsource is playing, the AVR335 senses
thetypeof bitstream datathatis present. U singthis
information, thecorrect s urround modewill automati
tallybe sabcted.Forexample, DTSbitstreams will
cause the unitto switch to DTSdecoding, andDolby
Digital b itstreams w illenabbDolbyDigital d ecoding.
When the unitsenses PCMdatafrom CDsor LDs, y ou
mayselect a nyof thestandadsurround modes, s uch
asDoiWPrologic II or Logic7. Sincethe rangeof
available s urround modesisdependent on the typeof
digital d atathatis present, t heAVR335 usesa variety
of indicators t o letyou knowwhattypeof signal i s
present. Thiswillhelpyouto understand t he choice
of modes,
When a digitalsoume is playing, the AVR335 willdis
playavarietyof messages t o indicate the typeof bit
sl]eambeingreceived. Thesemessages w illappear
shortly afteran inputor surround modeis changed,
andtheywillremaininthe Lower DisplayLine []
foraboutfiveseconds before thatportion of the dis
playreturns to the normal s urround modeindication.
SurroundModeTypes
ForDolbyDigital andDTSsources, athreedigit
indication w illappear, showing the number o f channels
present i nthedata.Anexample of thistypeof display
is 3/2/. 1.
Thefirstnumberindicates h owmanydiscrete front-
channel signals arepresent.
,, A "3" teB youthatsapamte f rontleft,centerand
frontrightsignals areavailabb. Thiswillbe displayed
forDolbyDigital 5 .1 andDTS5.1 programs.
,, A "2" tellsyouthatsaparate f rontleftandrightsig
nalsareavailable, butthereis nodiscrete center
channel signal. T hiswill bedisplayed f or Dolby
Digital b itstreams thathavestereoprogram material.
,, A "1" tellsyouthatthereis onlya monochannel
available inthe DolbyDigital b itstream.
Themiddlenumber i ndicates h owmanydiscrete sur
roundchannel s ignabarepresent.
,, A "2" tellsyouthatsapafate s urround leftandright
signals areavailable, Thiswinbe displayed f or Dolby
Digital 5 .1 andDTS5.1 programs.
,, A "1" tab youthatthemis onlya single, s urround
encoded surround channel. Thiswillappear f or
DolbyDigital b itstreams thathavematrix encoding.
,, A "0" indicates t hatthereis nosurround channel
information. Thiswillbe displayed f ortwo channel
stereoprograms.
Thelastnumber i ndicates w hether t hemisa discrete
low frequency effects(LFE) c hannel. Thisis the ".1"in
the common abbreviation of "5.1"soundandit isa
special c hannel thatcontains onlybass%quencbs.
,, A ".1" tellsyouthatanLFEchannel i s present. This
willbe displayed t ot DolbyDigital 5 .1 andDTS5.1
programs, asavailable.
,, A "0" indicates t hatthereis noLFEchannel infor
mation availabb. H owever, evenwhenthereis no
dedicated L FEchannel, low frequency s oundwill be
pmsant a t the subwoofer outputwhenthespeaker
configuration is setto showthe presence o f a
subwoofe_.
Theinformation i nthe rightsideofthe display willtell
youif thedigital a udiodatacontains a special flag
signal t hatwillautomatically activate theappropriate
6.1 or 7.1 mode. T hiswillbe shown as E X - 0 N or
E X - 0 F F for DolbyDigital b itslleams, and
E S - 0 N or ES - 0 F F forDTSbitstreams.
An UN L 0 CK message mayoccasionally appear
intheLower DisplayLine []. It doesnotindicate
a faultor problem withyourreceiver o r the digital
source, Thisis yourindication t hatthedigital a udio
datastreamhasbeeninterrupted o r is no longer
present.
Whenthe message appears andthe indicators f lash,
the unit'sdigital s ignal p rocessor h asno signal t o lock
onto,andisthus"unlocked/' Youmayseethismes
sagewhena DVDis firststarteduntilthestreamis
playing andthe processor determines w hichmode
to apply;or anytimethe datastreamis stopped or
paused, suchaswhenthemenusof somediscsam
displayed o r whenthe player isswitching between the
different s ections o f a disc. Y oumayalsoseethe mes
sagewhena satellite receive_, cableset-topor HDTV
tuneris inuseif the digital a udioistemporarily i nter-
rupted whenchannels a rechanged or whena cable

message isnormal, a nddoesnot indicate anyprob
lemwithyourreceive_. Rather, it teB youthatthe
incoming datahassimplybeenpaused or is not pres
ent fora varieS/of p osaible reasons,
WhenDoby Digital 3/2/.1 or DTS3/2/.1 signals am
beingplayed, t heAVR will automatically switchto the
proper s urround mode,andno otherprocessing m ay
beselected. Whena DolbyDigital s ignal w itha 3/1/0
or 2/0/0 signalisdetected, y oumayselect a nyof the
Dolby surround modes.

channel d atato makecertain thatit matches t heaudio
logoinformation s hown on the backof a DVD pack-
age.in somecases, y ouwillseean indication f or
"2/0/0" evenwhenthe disccontains a full5.1, or
3/2/.1, signal. Whenthishappens, checktheaudio
outputsettings for yourDVD player or theaudiomenu
selections f orthe specific discbeingplayedto make
certain thattheplayerissending thecorrect s ignal
to theAVR.
PCMPlaybackIndications
PCM is the abbreviation forPulse CodeModulation,
whichisthe typeof digitalsignal u sedfor standard CD
playback, andothernonDolbyDigital a ndnonDTS
digitalsources suchasMiniDisc. W hen a PCMsignal
isdetected, t he Lower DisplayLine []
willbriefly
showa message withthe bffersPCM,inaddition to a
readout of the sampling frequency o f the digital s ignal.
Inmostcases, thiswill be 4 8 k H z, thoughinthe
caseof specially m astered, high-resolution audio
discs, y ouwillseea 9 _,k H z indication.
