SpeakerSelectionand Placement
Theplacement o f speakers i na multichannel home
theater s ystemcanhavea noticeable impact o nthe
quality of sound reproduced.
Nomatter whichtype or brandof speakers is used,
the samemodelor brandof speaker s houldbe used
forthe left front,centerandrightfrontspeakers. This
creates a seamless frontseundstage a ndeliminates
the possibility o f distracting sonicdisturbances t hat
occurwhena soundmovesacrossmismatched
front channel speakers.
Speaker Placement
Depending onthe typeof center c hannel speaker i n
useandyourviewing device, p lacethe centerspeaker
either d irectlyabove or belowyourTV, o r inthe center
behind a petiorated frontprojection s creen.
Oncethecenterchannel s peaker i sinstalled, position
thel_ontleftandfrontrightspeakers s o thattheyare
astar away fromoneanother a sthe centerchannel
speaker i sfromthe preferred listening p osit_on, ideally,
the%nt channel speakers s hould be placedsothat
theirtweeters a reno merethan24" above or below
thelweetar inthe centerchannel speaker.
Depending o nthe specifics ofyourroomacoustics
andthe typeof speakers inuse,you mayfindthat
imaging is improved by moving the leftfrontandright
frontspeakers s lightly forward of the centerchannel
speaker, If possible, adjustall frontloudspeakers
sothattheyareaimedat earheight w henyouare
seated in thelistening position.
Using theseguidelines, you'll f indthatit takessome
experimentation
tofindthecorrect l ocation forthefront
speakers i nyourparticular installation. Don't b ealmidto
movethings around until t he system sounds correct.
Optimize y ourspeakers s othataudiotransitions across
thefrontofthe roomsoundsmooth, a ndsounds from
allspeakers a ppear t o arrive at thelistening position at
thesametime(without d elayfromthe centerspeaker
compared to theleftandrightspeakers).
When theAVR335 is usedin5.1 channel o peration,
the preferred location forsurround speakera i son the
sidewailsofthe room, a t or slightly behind the listen
ingposition, i na 7.1 channel system, b othsidesur
roundandbacksurround speakers a rerequired. The

Itis appropriate t o configure, theAVR335 foreither
5.1 or 7.1-channel operation, but netfor6.1 chan
ne&When6.1 channel program material or a 6.1
channel p rocessing m odeis inuse,material f orthe
surround backchannel will beoutputted simuRaneously
throughboththe SurroundBackLeft and Right
SpeakerOutputs@. Connecting o nlyoneloud
speaker t o thesespeaker t erminals w ill notonly
deprive youof the benefits of 7.1 channel surround
modes, suchas Logic7, but willalsointerfere withthe
functioning o f the EzSet+ speaker s etupandcalibra-
tionprocess asdescribed onpage20. it mayalsoput
undesirable strainonthe surround backamplifier c ir
curs andpower supplies.
Subwoefers p roduce nondirectional sound,sothey
maybe placedalmost a nywhere i na room. A ctual
placement shouldbe basedon roomsizeandshape
andthetypeof subweofer u sed. O nemethod of find-
ingtheoptimallocation fora subweofer is to beginby
placing it inthe frontof the room,aboutsix inches
from awall,or nearthe frontcornerof the room.
Another m ethodisto temporarily p lacethesubweofer
at yournormal l istening position, a ndthenwalk
around the roomuntilyoufinda spotwhere the sub
woofersounds best.Placethe subweofer i nthatspot.
Youshouldalsofollowthe instructions o f the sub
woofer'smanufacturer, or youmaywishto experi
meritwiththe bestlocationfora subwoofer i nyour
listening room.
System Setup
Oncethespeakers havebeenplacedinthe roomand
connected, the remaining stepsinthe setupprocess
am to program the AVR335's bassmanagement sys
ternforthe typeof speakers usedinyoursystem,
calibrate the outputlevels, a ndsetthe delaytimes
usedby thesurroundsound processoL
Youam nowreadyto poweruptheAVR335 to begin
thesefinaladjustments.
1.Makecertain thatthe ACpower cold _
isfirmly
inserted intoan unswitched A Coutlet. T omaintain
the unit'ssafeS/rating, DONOTsubstitute t he
power cordforonewithlowercurrent c apacity.
2. Press the Main PowerSwitch []
inuntilit
latches a ndtheword"OFF" o nthe top of the
switchdisappears i nside thefrontpanel.Note
thatthe Power Indicator[] willturnamber,
indicating t hattheunitis inthe Standby mode.
3. Remove t he protective p lastic filmfromthefront
panel l ens. i f leffin place, t hefilmwillaffectthe
pelformance o f yourr-emote c ontrol.
