SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

Speaker Setup
ThismenutellstheAVR335 whichtypeof speakers
am inuse. T hisis important asit adjusts t he settings
thatdecidewhether y oursystem will usethe "5-than
nel"or "6-channel/7 channel" m odes, a swenas
determining w hichspeakers receive low %quency
(bass) i nformation.
Ifyou havealready c ompleted an automated s etup
usingEzSet+ the settings c abulatad during thatpro
cedure will already a ppear. Nofurther a djustment is
required unless youwishto change a specific itemto
rdlectyourpersonal tasteor a nonstandard system
configurafion.
Foreachof thesesettings, u sethe L A RGE setting
if the speakers f or a particular p osition aretraditional
full-range loudspeakers. Usethe SII A L L setting for
smaller, frequency limited satellite speakers t hatdo
not reproduce sounds below60Hz,Notethatwhen
"small"speakers a m used,a subwoofer i srequired to
reproduce low frequency sounds. R emember thatthe
"large"and"small" d escriptions d o not referto the
actual p hysical sizeof the speakers, butto theirabilib/
to reproduce low frequency sounds, I fyouarein
doubtasto whichcatago_y d escribes y ourspeakers,
consult t he specifications inthe speakers' owner's
manual, o r askyourdealer.
Thismenuscreen alsoallows youto enterthe settings
fortheA\/R335's Quadruple C rossover fealure, w hich
allows a different c rossover pointto be usedforthe
frontleft/right, c enter a ndsurround speakers. In
systems w here fulFrange or towerspeakers a reused
forthefrontsoundstage o r where different b rands
or models areinuseat thevarious speakerposifions,
thisfeature allows youto customize t he bassmanage
mentandredirection c ircuits witha precision not
previously p ossible.
It iseasiest t o enterthe propersettings forspeaker
setupthrough the SP EA KE R SET UP menu
(Figure 9). Ifthatmenuis notalready on yourscreen
fromthe prioradjustments, pressthe OSDButton
to bringup the MASTER MENU (Figure 1),

eitherthespeaker s izesetting or theexactcrossover
pointusedforthatspeaker g roup. F orthefirstpass
through the menu,leave the setting at itsdefault
optionof SI Z E, andthenproceed asoutlined
below. O ncethe speaker c hoices havebeenset,you
maywishto _eturn to thislineto change the option so
thatthe crossover seltings maybeadjusted.
Beginthespeaker s etupprocess by making certain that
thecursorispoinfing towaldthe L E F T/R T GHT
line, w hichsetstheconfiguration forthefrontleftand
rightspeakers, if youwishto makea change tothe
flontspeakers' configurafion, pressthe,/1_ Buttons
sothateitherL AR GE or S11 AL L appears,
matching theappropriate descripfion Qomtheddinifions
shown above.
WhenS MAL L isselected, lowf_equencies willbe
sentonlyto thesubwoofer output, I fyouchoose this
opfion andthereis nosubwoo%youwillnot hear a ny
lowf_equency sounds l_omthef_ont c hannels.
WhenL ARGE is selected, afuIFrange o utput w illbe
sentto thefrontleftandflontrightoutputs. Depending
onthe choice madeinthe SU BW0 0 F ER linein
thismenu,bass information m ayalsobedirected to the
flontleft!right s peakers, a subwoofer or both.
NOTE: W hen thefiont speakers a resetto the
L A RGE opfion andthesurround modeiesetto
"Sulround Off", o r puretwochannel stereo, w hen an
analog signal s ource is present it willbe routed directly
florathe inputto thevolume control w ithout b eingdigi
fized or processed. Ifyouhave fullrangefrontspeakers
andwishto remove alldigital p rocessi% fromthecircuit
path,select t hisconfiguration. Ifyouwishto setthis
opfion forusewithonlyoneinput, s uchasaCDplayer
thatuses an external DAC or anoptional, external
phonopreamp, choose the I N DE PEN DEN T
set_ng onthe BAS S MGR lineatthe bottom of
thismenusothatonly thoseinputs where the analog
bypass isdesired willbe routed inthisfashion, w hile
otheranalog inputs suchasaVCRor cableboxwill be
digitized f orsurround processing.

WhenSMAL L isselected, l owfrequency c enter
channel sounds willbesentonly b the subwoofer out-
put.Ifyouchoose thisoption andthereisno subwoofer
connected, youwillnot hearlowfrequency sounds from
the center c hannel.
WhenL ARGE is selected, a fulFmnge output w illbe
sentto thecenterspeaker o utput, a ndNOcenter
channel s ignal willbe sentto the subwoofer output.
NOTE: I f youchoose Logic7 asthe surround mode,
the "large"option will notbe available f or thecenter
speaker. Thisis dueto therequirements of Logic7
processing, anddoesnot indicate a problem with
yourreceive_.
WhenN0 NE is selected, n o signals will besentto
the centerchannel output. T hereceiver w illoperate in
a "phantom" centerchannel m odeandcenterchannel
information w illbe sentto the leftandrightfrontchan-
neloutputs, Whenonlyfront leftandrightspeakers a re
used, w ithno centeror surround speakers, VMAxisa
goodalternative m ode.
Whenyouhavecompleted yourselection forthecen-
ter channel, pressthe • Button _
to movethe
cursorto SURROUND.
Press t he _/_, Buttons_
to select t he option that
bestdescribes y oursurround speakers b ased on the
speaker d efinitions shown on thispage.
WhenSMAL L is selected, l ow frequency s urround
channel s ounds will besentto the subwoofer output
only.if you choose thisoption andthereisno sub
wooferconnected, youwill nothearany lowfrequency
sounds fromthe surround channel.
WhenL A RGE isselected, a fullrangeoutput
will besentto the surround channel o utputs, and
NOsurround channel signals winbe sentto the
subwoofer o utput.
WhenN0 NE is selected, s urround soundinforma-
tionwinbesplitbetween thefrontleftandfrontright
outputs. F oroptimal p e_iormance whenno surround
speakers a rein use,theDolbyVirtual Speaker m ode
shouldbe used.
NOTE: I no_derto adiust t he speaker s ettings f or the
surround backchannels, a DolbyDigital o r DTSsource
mustbe playing. Thisenables thesystem to activate
the surround backprocessing m ode.
