DoVeTAIL oPeRATIoN
(eXPANSIoN of JAWS INTo A ReCeSS)
Make sure the jaws are fully seated in the workpiece recess. If the work-
piece is not riding correctly, it could dislodge from the chuck. Loosen jaws and remount
correctly.
This function is for bowl and platter turning where the projection (depth) of the wood blank is
less than 4" (100 mm). If used on longer wood, there is a great danger of wood tearing out and
dislodging from chuck.
Using the standard 2" (50 mm) jaws can help turn bowls up to 12" (310 mm) in diameter.
(Consult specific instructions included for any other jaw set.) Do not exceed 600 RPM with this
operation. Out of balance stock must be turned at the slowest speed possible.
Any recess can be turned between 2" (50 mm) and 2-3/4" (70 mm) in diameter. For smaller lids
and thin platters (not exceeding 6" (150 mm) in diameter) only a shallow recess of around 1/8"
(3 mm) is necessary. It will be a matter of gaining experience as to what combinations and sizes
will best suit this operation.
SPIGOT OPERATION
(CoNTRACTIoN of JAWS ARoUND A WooDeN SPIgoT)
To AVoID INJURy, Do not exceed 850 RPM for this operation.
This function is useful for box, goblet and vase turning, that is, end grain items with a fair
degree of overhang. The instructions here apply to the supplied 2" (50 mm) jaws but the gen-
eral spigot technique is the same for other jaw types.
NOTE: Maximum turning speed and spigot size varies with different jaw types. Consult acces-
sory jaw manual or instruction sheets. USe oNLy JAW SeTS approved for use with this
chuck.
With the supplied set of 2" (50 mm) jaws a maximum workpiece size of 4" (100 mm) diameter
(NOT spigot size) by 6" (150 mm) length can be turned. Also, square timber can be turned of
the same length and between 1-1/2" (40 mm) to 2" (50 mm) with the grip of all four jaws into
the wood. MAKe SURe you have an adequate grip before operation by vigorously wrench-
ing the workpiece mounted on the chuck. If any loosening occurs, DO NOT PROCEED with
operation. Repeat tightening procedure and re-test grip.
SPIgoT SIZe: The supplied jaws will grip a round spigot between 1-13/16" (45 mm) to 2-5/16
(65 mm) in diameter or square timber between 1-5/8" (40 mm) to 2" (50 mm) square.
oPeRATIoN WITH JAW SLIDeS oNLy (fIg. 8)
With the 2" (50 mm) add-on jaws removed, the jaw slides will grip either round or square timber
down to 3/16" (4.8 mm) and up to 1" (25.4 mm) round or 11/16" (17 mm) square. The length
should not exceed 6" (150 mm). Small work not greater than 5/16" (8 mm) diameter can be
turned at speeds up to 1800 RPM. Larger work (up to the diameter capacities just mentioned)
held in the jaw slides should NoT eXCeeD 850 RPM.
