LON communication

LON communication is normally used in substation automation systems. Optical fiber is used within
the substation as the physical communication link.
The test can only be carried out when the whole communication system is installed. Thus, the test is
a system test and is not dealt with here.

Figure 8:
An optical network can be used within the substation automation system. This enables
communication with the IEDs through the LON bus from the operator's workplace, from the control
center and also from other IEDs via bay-to-bay horizontal communication. For LON communication
an SLM card should be ordered for the IEDs.
The fiber optic LON bus is implemented using either glass core or plastic core fiber optic cables.
