BUILT-IN DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER (DVR)

OVERVIEW

This HDD is not exchangeable with an HDD purchased from any retail outlet. The programs and
formatting are encrypted and written special for this product. The reason is CP (Copy Protection). The
laws governing force CE (Consumer Manufacturers) to design products this way to protect programs
from copyrite violations. The encryption disallows the programs that are recorded from being played
on a personal computer. EX: Someone records a movie that is tagged as copy once thus allowing the
movie to be recorded ONLY one time, then the HDD is removed from the unit and placed in a PC and
the movie is posted for free download on the internet. This is a copy protection violation and can
land the customer in jail.
To prevent this, the movie is encrypted on the HDD and still has CP (Copy Protect) encryption,
preventing further copies from being produced. The design had to be done this way to achieve FCC
approval. The amount of programming that can be recorded on this HDD varies due to content and
format. An HD program will take more HDD space than an SD program, thus the HDD will hold more
SD or ED than it will HD programming. The quality is much better with HD than ED and ED is better
than SD.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The HDD is not a parallel portion of the video circuit but a series part of the video circuit. This allows
instant record as a feature for the customer. If you suspect the HDD, the easiest way is to remove the
IDE cable from the HDD, or disconnect this cable from the Digital PCB, and turn the unit back on. The
software automatically senses the presence of the HDD. Do not connect or disconnect these cables
with the unit connected to A/C power because this can damage the HDD and the digital PCB. This also
allows the technician to remove or disconnect the HDD and allow the customer to continue using the
unit till the new HDD arrives and can be installed.
