ABOUT GPS/AVL DATA

Important: FleetSync Enhanced GPS features require FleetSync compatible GPS/AVL
Application Software. Please see LMR price pages for FleetSync Enhanced Application
Software.
A Kenwood 80-Series mobile radio can use raw NMEA-0183 location data from a GPS receiver,
and then encode this information with standard NMEA-0183 header words, FleetSync ID
numbers, and/or Status with the NMEA-0183 location information. This packetized data is then
sent over-the-air to a compatible base station via a modulated signal created by the mobile radio's
internal modem. Refer to the Accessory Interfaces section in this manual.
CONFIGURING AN ENHANCED GPS (BASE) STATION
There are three ways to configure an Enhanced GPS Base Station:
1. Connect a Kenwood FleetSync mobile unit (with FleetSync Enhanced option enabled) to a PC
and install FleetSync-compatible GPS AVL mapping application software.
2. Interface any brand of mobile radio with receive and transmit audio I/O's to a PC sound card
input and install FleetSync-compatible GPS AVL mapping application software. The AVL
software should support signal processing of the FleetSync over-the-air protocol via the PC sound
card.
3. Interface any brand of mobile radio with receive and transmit audio I/O's to a FleetSync-
compatible radio modem in a PC and install FleetSync-compatible GPS AVL mapping
application software. The AVL software should support encoding and decoding of the serial data
protocol used in the FleetSync-compatible radio modem.
GPS/AVL MAPPING AND FLEET MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Using a FleetSync-compatible GPS AVL mapping and fleet management software package, a
dispatch PC can display the Fleet/ID numbers, Status Messages and fleet vehicles location on a
map, as shown in Figure 11 (on the next page). The software could be set to poll individual
vehicles to send GPS information or the 80-Series mobiles can be programmed to automatically
send information at timed intervals.
