ENHANCED FEATURE SET APPLICATIONS (continued)

SHORT TEXT MESSAGING

Definition:
A 48 Character Alphanumeric message can be sent to a radio.
Usage:
Names/Phone Numbers/Addresses etc., can be sent to a radio without tying up valuable
airtime. Furthermore the received messages can be stored in one of the 4 short message
memories (FIFO, First In First Out), and can be recalled by the operator instead of having
to write the message down.
Application:
A taxi cab dispatcher sends a Short Text message call for passenger pickup to all units in
a fleet. The message consists of the passenger's name and address. Two taxis in the zone
or close to the address issue a Status Message to "TAKE BID," which appears on the
dispatcher's CAD PC display, as shown in Figure 9.
NOTES:
1. Short Text Messaging permits receiving and storing four (4) text messages of up to 48
alphanumeric characters each in the 80 Series memory. More can be received, but they are FIFO
(First In First Out) in memory.
2. Messages are stored in volatile memory and will be lost if the radio is turned off and on.
3. Requires FleetSync-compatible CAD and/or AVL mapping with fleet management dispatch
software at the base station/console. Also required is a compatible MDT, Status Message Unit, or
mobile-PC with FleetSync-compatible application software installed on each mobile radio.
