Chapter 8 Configuring the IS100e
Protocol
A set of rules and conventions that describes the behaviors that computer must
follow in order to understand each other.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol – a main protocol to send and receive email between
servers on the Internet.
Subnet mask
A mask used to determine what subnet an IP address belongs to. An IP address
has two components, the network address and the host address. For example,
consider the IP address 150.215.017.009. Assuming this is part of a Class B
network, the first two numbers (150.215) represent the Class B network address,
and the second two numbers (017.009) identify a particular host on this network.
TCP/IP
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol – a suite of communication
protocol that defines the basic working of the Internet. In fact, TCP/IP is the
protocol of the Internet because it's the language by which all Internet computers
talk to each other.
