line with the water connection to the steamer. A scale control cartridge inside the housing slowly releases a tasteless,
odorless and foodsafe chemical into the incoming water stream. The chemical combines with the dissolved minerals in
the water and prevents them from forming hard scale in the steam generator at the bottom of the SmartSteam cavity.
The treatment process is designed to make that cleaning process easier and faster.
Cleaning is easier because in moderately hard conditions, the soft scale releases quickly from the steamer. In the most
difficult conditions, adding a cup of vinegar to the steamer compartment 20 minutes before final shutdown and draining
of the steamer further loosens the deposits making them easy to remove. Cleaning is faster because the effort expended
in removing the scale from the steamer is lower and therefore takes less time.
The design of the treatment kit allows an operator maximum time between change-out and an easy observation method
of determining when change-out is needed. The amount of material and speed of release is set to last for a minimum
of six months on a heavily used SmartSteam [12-16 hours/day steaming, double-stacked 10-pan steamer (2)SSB-10GF].
On all other capacity SmartSteam units the expected cartridge life before needing replacement is more than 1 year. In
locations with multiple SmartSteam units, a separate treatment kit is recommended for each steamer. For the smaller
table top and single cavity models, the cartridge will last longer than 1 year.
Components supplied in the Groen SmartSteam Water Treatment Kit shown below. Standard hose fittings are supplied
for the inlet and outlet connections and a ball type valve is included to shut-off the incoming water supply when
changing the cartridge.
