Background The Leica TS16 EDM was purchased new from CR Kennedy, Sydney in May 2022. Its purchase was enabled by a grant received from ACT Sport and Recreation. It came with the Leica Captivate software and the Athletics module (v.7) software.

MEASURING THROWS This section explains how to set up the EDM for measuring throws. Positioning the EDM Choose a position that has clear lines of sight to the centre of the circle (8m mark for jav), the rim of the circle (foul line for jav) and the landing sector.

Check and adjust the level of the EDM using the spirit level. The level should be placed front-back and then side-side. Adjust the leg length (or press on the tripod feet) to level the EDM. Mount the EDM Remove the cover from the top of the EDM and mount the EDM on the tripod.

Insert battery Insert the battery as shown in the diagram below. Make sure the electrodes are at the top and pointing in. Level the EDM Level the EDM using the three tribrach foot screws on the base of the EDM. Ideally, the foot screws should be in the mid point of their range and minimal adjustment should be required to level the EDM.

Select event At the main menu, select ‘Athletics’ (bottom row, 2 from left) using the touchscreen or up/down arrows and ‘ok’ button. Select event (eg shot put, javelin, discus, hammer, long jump, pole vault) using the touch screen or left/right arrows and ‘ok’.

Assemble prism pole Screw the four sections of the prism pole together, screw the prism on to the bottom, and screw the spike on to the bottom of prism. To use the prism, place the spike at the measuring point so that the bubble is in the centre of the level on the prism.

With the prism on the centre mark of the circle (or 8m mark for javelin), align the optical sight on the prism and press F2 [Dist] then F3 [Store]. Select the ‘check’ tab. Place the prism on the inside edge of the rim (or foul for javelin). Align the optical sights with the prism and press F2 [Dist].

Measure check mark Select ‘measure throw’ using the touch screen or F1 [ok] button. With the prism on the golf tee placed alongside the sector tape approximately where the throws are expected to land, align the optical sight with the prism and press F2 [Dist] and then the Fn button and then F4 [Fine].

Record the 3 decimal place measurement on the results sheet (or a piece of paper) and note the Ath ID number (eg TS0003). Then press F3 [Store]. The screen should show “Measurement sent successfully” and then ‘Distance already sent’ and the Ath ID number should advance by one (eg TS0001 to TS0002) and no distance should be shown.

Meaure throws Align optical sight with prism, press F2 [Dist], record the distance on the results sheet and press F3 [Store]. The Ath ID number will advance one and the screen will show ‘measurement sent successfully”, and then ‘Distance already sent’. Event distance will be blank.

Record fouls A foul throw can be saved in the EDM like any other throw (particularly if a protest is possible)’ or it can be recorded as a foul by pressing F5 [Foul]. The screen will show “Foul sent successfully” and then ‘Foul already sent’...

Change Ath ID At the end of a round, the Ath ID number can be reset by using the red stylus on the touchscreen. Touch Ath ID and enter the new number using the stylus. It is recommended to use a three digit number where the first number corresponds to the round and the second and third numbers correspond to the athlete in competing order.

Pack down Press Esc button to return to Main Menu. Press and hold on/off button for 5 seconds. Use the touch screen to select ‘Power down and turn off’ or use the ‘ok’ button. Disassemble EDM as per reverse of set up. Make sure: •...
